About Christina

I truly believe in every child, teenager, and adult and their abilities to accomplish "anything" in their lives.

In the last 17 years, I have had opportunities to work with children and adults. The employment positions that I held include Deaf Mentor, Tutor, Adjunct Instructor, American Sign Language Instructor, Intensive Case Manager, Student Life Counselor, Peer Counselor, Nanny, Nursery Staff, and Teacher Assistant. All of the people I worked with were both deaf and hearing. It is clear that my being deaf does not impede me from assisting others in their learning process.

In addition to experience, I completed and received a bachelor of science in family and child studies and a master of science in early childhood studies. These educational institutions prepared me well for teaching students of all kinds. Because every individual differs in the learning process, I am always up for a challenge.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I am a Life Group Leader at Independent Bible Church where I teach a group of women about Bible and in accordance to the pastor's lesson plan.

Hard Of Hearing

With years of teaching at Gallaudet University, the world's only deaf and hard of hearing liberal arts university, I taught classes of 12 students who identified themselves hard of hearing and deaf.

Sign Language

This ASL tutor is an opportunity for individuals to improve their communication abilities with co-workers and friends who are Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing and to educate those who may be losing their hearing, those incorporating signs in communicating with their hearing children, and those who simply have an interest in American Sign Language.

Tutor lesson:

ASL I – In ASL I you are introduced to the world, culture and language of American Sign Language. You will learn to fingerspell the alphabet, sign numbers, sign simple courtesy phrases and gain an understanding of the structure of the language. You will learn new vocabulary each week and learn to incorporate it into sentences.

ASL II - This level provides an opportunity for you to improve your communication abilities with people who are Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing. You will learn even more vocabulary, building on the vocabulary from ASL I, and learn more complex sentence structures.

ASL III – This level allows you to improve your communication abilities with people who are Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing further. You will learn more about grammatical structure; increase your knowledge of sign vocabulary, learn to identify and use classifiers, and much more.

ASL: Conversational Sign – Conversational Sign allows you to utilize the vocabulary and sentence structures taught in ASL I, II and III and forces you to think on your feet through dialgoue and activities. You will build on your knowledge of ASL and expand your comfort level through natural conversations.

I am profoundly deaf and American Sign Language is my primary language. I've used this language since I was 4 months old. In addition to that, I've taught ASL at Frederick Community College as a tutor and subsitute teacher for a year. Prior to that, I've taught ASL classes for adults and young children through Deafnet Inc in hagerstown, md for one full year. In total of my work experience, I work within the deaf community such as Maryland School for the Deaf, Salisbury Bevhaioral Health, Inc's Deaf unit, and Gallaudet University where ASL is required and used on regular basis.
