Bio

I only had my AA when I taught my first class of six kindergartners in 1981. It was so much fun, and they all learned to read! I was hooked! I went on to get my BA in education. That was followed by having two children. I started teaching my first daughter the alphabet sounds when she was three. An eager learner, she was reading books by the time she turned four, and we were unofficially homeschooling.

I continued homeschooling my daughters through high school. They went on to obtain advanced degrees, and so did I. After teaching for several years in private schools, I completed my MAT at the age of 52 in 2011 and became certified/licensed to teach in West Virginia in special education, K-adult. I recently decided to retire, but would love to continue teaching one-on-one as doors open.

Math is intriguing because there are no gray areas! There may be many ways to reach the conclusion, but there is always only one correct answer. I love teaching math because children learn in different ways, and it's fun to use manipulatives and try the different avenues of reaching the answer until one way finally clicks and the light bulb comes on! I have experimented with many different teaching methods and I own a lot of manipultatives. I welcome the opportunity to help a child get excited because they've figured out how to solve problems.

Reading is my passion. I love, love, LOVE teaching children how to read. It opens up the world to them and changes their lives! I've had the privilege of teaching many children how to read, from age three to late elementary school. I have invested in my own personal library of over 1,000 books, so I can provide children with books on their level and that suit their interests. I also enjoy teaching writing. Writing is another of my passions. It is a way to express oneself and to communicate with others. It can be a very personal thing, but in order to be successful in life, students should be able to write well. I like to help students develop a passion for wanting to do their very best in written expression.

Education is something that no one can ever take from you, and the more one pursues an education, the greater their chances for success in life. The better educated you are, the more doors that will open for you. You will have a greater chance to obtain the occupation that you desire, and achieve the income and lifestyle you want. My mantra for my students is, "Seek that you may excel. Always try your hardest and do your best!" I welcome the chance to assist any children and their families on this academic journey.
