About Amanda

Hi, I am Amanda, but you may call me Mandy! I am currently working on obtaining my M.S. in Environmental Science from Marshall University by July 7, 2017. Marshall University was where, in 2015, I received my two B.S. degrees in Environmental Science and Natural Resource & Recreation Management. Throughout my entire academic career I have been an avid learner and scholar. In high school I was able to attend the INTEL International Science Fair located in Indianapolis, Indiana, while participating in varsity level sports. By excelling not only on the field, but also in the classroom has taught me great time management and organizational skills. During my time in college I have changed my major multiple times (from Biology, Chemistry, English, Psychology, and Sociology) until I found my "calling" within Environmental Science. Although many of my previous majors do not really deal with one another, they all have helped me grasp various points of view and skills that have helped me become more understanding and knowledgeable. Therefore, I believe I have a well-rounded grasp on many different subjects and topics. Courses at Marshall University use Environmental Science to understand aquatic toxicology and freshwater ecology. Both the undergraduate and graduate courses at Marshall integrate various departments to ensure that students learn computer skills, mathematical skills, writing skills, etc. I have found that learning a skill or developing expertise, in a field of study, is efficient only if one is able to be introduced and therefore learn from multiple disciplines.

I have been a laboratory course instructor for one semester. Throughout the course of this class it was my duty to create, develop, and provide, students with instruction and graded material. I was able to teach these students my personal expert knowledge, while also learning new and exciting information alongside of them. This class was a course that was required for undergraduate environmental science majors, however about 1/3rd of the classroom consisted of students from other majors (i.e. computer sciences, criminal justice, etc.). Therefore, I had to learn to teach students that either were familiar or unfamiliar with the topics at hand. Throughout the semester, I ensured that the students used what they learned in my course to complete their semester-long project in the lecture course, taught by my graduate advisor. By the end of the course many of the students commented that my laboratory class was very beneficial to them, thus my advisor had me create a detailed course syllabus.

Although I have never actually been involved in formal tutoring, many co-workers and students have asked me to help them with their writing, research, homework, etc. One friend of mine had me tutor him for an entire semester on Chemistry II. Others have asked me to proofread and edit their papers for various classes. Between both the laboratory teaching and random tutoring, all my students have said that I am enthusiastic and help them think/learn in a more concise and clear way. I ensure that my students understand why a topic is worth learning, what makes the topic so important to learn, and how to ensure that the topic is fully understood and grasped by the student.

Overall I want you (students and parents reading this description) to realize that I am dedicated to ensuring that whomever reaches out to me excels in their schoolwork. I have always been a person that enjoys lending a hand to those who need help. I am always open to any/all suggestions, comments, and feedback. Currently I work most weekends, therefore my availability will be limited from Friday evening until Sunday evening, however during the week I am available for any and all sessions!

I have excelled at all basic level math (elementary math, Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, and Trigonometry). However, it has been some years since I have had to deal with many of the topics involved in these course, therefore if a student needs help in these areas I would need to have some time to refresh my memory. Statistics is the one mathematical course that I am more familiar with, due to my current thesis project. Thus, I will be more apt to helping those with problems in basic to moderate levels of statistics.

Over the years I have consistently taken many biological and ecological courses. My undergraduate degrees are both heavily influenced by biology and ecology, along with my (almost completed) graduate degree. I am very familiar with almost all general biology and ecology coursework and topics. However, my expertise would be in any biological or ecological questions or concerns regarding freshwater topics.

I have previously dabbled in undergraduate coursework within the field of English studies. From explaining the meaning behind great works of literature to developing multiple create writing essays, I believe I have an amazing understanding of English. I love to read books and learn new words, however writing essays and editing papers is my absolute favorite!

If you are looking for a tutor that is a well-rounded scholar, who will go above and beyond to learn and teach her students, you have come to the right profile! I promise that I will always give 110% to ensure that the student receives the best help and education possible. Even if I can't personally provide the most direct and helpful insight, I promise I will reach out to other tutors to ensure that I am teaching student's properly and correctly.

Please, feel free to contact me at anytime and I promise I will respond within 36-hours.
My only policies are:
1) If you need to cancel, please tell me at least 2 hours in advance
2) The earliest scheduled time I will provide is 10am

I look forward to providing help to those who need just an extra boost to get them back on the right track!!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

GIS

I have had multiple courses regarding the usage of ArcGIS. These courses included developing and creating raster files, shape files, exploring ArcMap, ESRI, etc. In addition, I have personally used GIS mapping tools for multiple projects.

Physical Science

Earth sciences are primarily considered to be chemistry, astronomy, and physics. I have been awarded chemistry scholarships before and have received excellent results within the designated chemistry courses. Physics is more difficult more me to comprehend, however I have taken a few physics based courses. The only aspect of earth science I'm not completely familiar with is astronomy. However, I have learned and was taught about basic astronomy topics.

Statistics

I am very familiar with NCSS statistical software and using excel to conduct basic/preliminary statistical analysis. I have used R before, however I am not an expert in it and would need to take time to re-study the application and relearn it. As for general understanding and knowledge of statistics, I have a fairly decent idea of which test to use, why to use it, how to use it, and when to use it.
