Bio

I speak 2 languages: English and bad Chinese (can read some, too). I've used up and worn out a passport in less than 3 yrs. Again, after less than 3 years, the next passport had pages added. In fact, I'm on my fourth passport in 16 years. Yes, I really like international travel and I'm relatively good with languages that I don't really know.

I lived for 15 years in Taiwan and traveled extensively throughout the region, most frequently to the Philippines and Singapore. That was quite a change from New England and northern Maine where I got my University degree. Surprisingly, however, the same sled dogs that we used to race in Fort Kent, Maine were popular pets in Taiwan.

I have a long background in electrical work, electronics, and computers. I even held a master electrician's license at one time and currently hold amateur radio callsign N8VJM. I also have a lengthy background in EMS having worked on volunteer and professional ambulance services as-well-as being an industrial EMT and being HAZMAT certified.

I'm looking forward do getting back to motorcycling, hiking and camping in the mountains, hunting, and fishing now that I am back in the USA.

For fifteen years in Taiwan, I ...
* taught English to various groups and individuals (small children to adults).
* provided instruction and (English and IT) consultancy services to various medical, engineering and business professionals.
* provided English IT/Web hardware, software, writing, AV, and creative consultancy services to various clients.

I received the National Council of Teachers of English Finalist Award (i.e. Top Honors). (USA 1980) [NOTE: This is a worldwide writing competition restricted to nominees from American schools. Teachers may nominate one student per 500 students in the school population. Nominees submit prepared writing samples and are then required to write a composition on an unannounced topic, given only an hour's time.]
I won the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America (VICA) Skill Olympics (Electronics Career Field) in Marion County West Virginia. I opted not to participate in the WV State VICA Skill Olympics because of a VICA rule prohibiting one person from representing a state at the national competition in both skill and leadership areas. I was awarded the gold medal for Extemporaneous Speech by the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America. (1981) [NOTE: I participated in the High School Division, but all contestants, including adults, were scored by the same judges using the same criteria. I garnered the top score overall among ALL contestants.]
I served as President of the UMFK Writers' Group for three years and was an Associate Editor of the yearly magazine. [During the period of 1995~2000]
At UMFK, I attended a (restricted admission, professor's permission only) 400-level class (i.e. a top level class for upperclassmen) entitled "Editing for Publishers" and received a grade of "A". Therein, I served as an Associate Editor and Desktop Publishing Consultant for the publication of UMFK's yearly magazine entitled "The River Review".
I served as Secretary of the Saint John Valley Amateur Association (SJVARA) from 1996 to 2000 (including a one-year concurrent term as Vice-President). My duties included functioning as Associate Editor and Website Manager for the monthly newsletter "FEEDPOINT", sometimes running weekly radio nets, serving as Net Control Operator for the Can-Am Crown Sled Dog Races, and (once) negotiating a legal contract with a timber company for access to land and use of a tower and facilities wherein SJVARA kept remotely controlled radio repeater equipment.

My educational philosophy is that my students are my partners. We work together to get where the student needs to go.
