I am an Elementary teacher with three years of regular classroom experience at the Elementary level along with two years of tutoring experience. I am also certified in English as a Second Language (ESL) for students who wish to learn English. I enjoy helping students learn and develop according to their ability level. As a classroom teacher of diverse groups of students I am skilled at modifying curriculum based on students' individual needs.
My first teaching job was in an Elementary Classroom with many native Spanish speakers who desired to learn English. I frequently used both English and Spanish to ensure students’ understanding. I also held parent teacher conferences in Spanish and English to communicate with all families. I was able to utilize my English as a Second Language (ESL) knowledge to help students succeed.
I have taught kindergarten and first grade, both of which focus heavily on reading and reading comprehension. Reading is a wonderful way for students' brains to develop and grow. I love watching the developmental process when students learn to read.
Understanding the make up of words and the sounds that letters make when they are put together is such an important foundation to building a great reader!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I received a degree in elementary education and have experience teaching young children phonics. My education included a class in the development of children's reading abilities, which includes phonics or phonemic awareness. I have had countless opportunities to utilize those skills learned in classrooms with my students.
Phonemic awareness gives students the ability to articulate sounds in words correctly, resulting in better readers. My lessons include students voicing the sounds as we learn, in order for them to know how to make the sounds. After the lesson I give students the opportunity to apply their knowledge in another type of activity, whether it is on paper or in more of a game format.
I believe that these two activities prove beneficial for young aspiring readers.
