About Matthew

“But whatever you do, come back soon from body to mind. The mind must be exercised both day and night, for it is nourished by moderate labour. and this form of exercise need not be hampered by cold or hot weather, or even by old age.

Cultivate that good which improves with the years. Of course I do not command you to be always bending over your books and your writing materials; the mind must have a change, – but a change of such a kind that it is not unnerved, but merely unbent.” — Seneca, Moral Letters to Lucilius

Education is one of the most critical pursuits in human life, and my calling is to facilitate that pursuit whenever and wherever possible. People pursue education for all kinds of reasons — self-fulfillment, being a better citizen, satisfying curiosity, earning a good grade — and it is my hope that, whatever their reasons, people can use what they discover to build a better world.

I am currently pursuing a PhD in English literature in order to be a better teacher and scholar. While my focus is currently on 20th century American literature, my BA and MA (both magna cum laude) are in creative writing. I also have experience as a proofreader and editor. Since fall 2014, I have been teaching college composition at UW-Milwaukee.

With this background, my students can expect help in everything from reading comprehension to composition to literary analysis. In both reading and writing, I expect careful attention to be paid to the words on the page and the context in which they are produced. English can and should be a challenging subject, but it has its pleasures, too.

I am happy to work with students at any level, and I take your success very seriously. Please email me with your questions.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I hold two degrees in English -- a BA and an MA -- and am in the process of obtaining a PhD in the same. The emphasis of my first two degrees was writing, while my current emphasis is on literature.

Literature

I'm currently enrolled in the Literary and Cultural Studies PhD track at UW-Milwaukee. The bulk of my work as a graduate student involves reading and writing about primary and secondary literature. My field of specialization is 20th century American lit, but I have done course work in Shakespeare, 19th c. and 20th c. literature.

Writing

I'm qualified in writing, reading, proofreading, grammar, and general English. I hold two degrees in English -- a BA and an MA -- and am in the process of a PhD in the same. The emphasis of my first two degrees was writing. Additionally, I have written and edited for a student newspaper, a magazine, and a literary journal.
