About Sarah

I graduated with a B.A. in English from UW-Superior in December 2015. I am a native English speaker, and I have been speaking Spanish for over nine years. Feel free to contact me with any inquiries or questions. I suggest contacting me at least one day in advance for setting up a lesson.

I am experienced tutoring both English and Spanish through a tutoring job I held when I attended college, (2+ years) along with teaching experience. I taught English to children ages 3-12 in Japan during four months from May to August 2016. I translated between English & Spanish when studying abroad in Oaxaca, Mexico, during January 2015 and also taught art projects to elementary children while in Oaxaca.

I began learning Spanish at age 14. I minored in Spanish at UW-Superior. I taught Spanish to 4th graders during my senior year of high school as a part of my Spanish class. In the summer of 2012, I was employed by Concordia Language Villages at El Lago del Bosque, the Spanish language camp. Spanish has been one of my greatest passions for nearly a decade now.

I have experience tutoring English as well. I also worked at my university's Writing Center, where I worked with American and international students to assist in the paper writing process. We weren't a proofreading service- we strove to make better writers, not better papers. I am familiar with online tutoring as the Writing Center offered in-person and online writing services! I am very comfortable working with international students and domestic students on their writing. I also majored in English literature, so I am familiar with a wide range of literature from around the globe. My other job on campus was as a general tutor with Student Support Services.

When I teach, I do my best to have students engage in the process. I am very patient, flexible, caring, and willing to adapt to different learning styles as needed.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I spent four months volunteering at an elementary school in Superior, Wisconsin. I worked with Kindergartners, K-1 special ed., and 5th grade students. When I studied abroad in Oaxaca, Mexico, I taught art projects to elementary aged children.

English

I am a native English speaker, and have greatly enjoyed learning and sharing my knowledge of English with others. I majored in English literature at UW-Superior and graduated with honors (Magna Cum Laude). I have tutored domestic and international college students in English. I have also taught English to K-1 children on a volunteer basis during the course of a semester.

ESL/ESOL

I received brief ESL training when I worked at my university's Writing Center. This means that I was prepared to work with international students on their writing. I was very involved in my university's multicultural group, the World Student Association, where I served as Vice President and Secretary. I have 5+ years of multicultural communication experience, and have hosted an exchange student, had foreign roommates at college, and I've helped international friends with their homework as well.

Literature

My major in college was English Literature. I took classes in American Literature, Brit. Lit., World Literature, Avant Garde Literature, and much more. I graduated with Magna Cum Laude honors.

Proofreading

I worked at my university's Writing Center for over a year. While we were not a proofreading service-- we strove to create better writers, not better papers-- I would still offer up proofreading services to some extent. In my free time, I volunteered to proofread papers for international friends/ESL students during college.

Reading

I am an avid reader who has read a wide variety of literature. I volunteered at an elementary school in 2014, where I helped Kindergartners with reading and other tasks.

Salsa Dancing

I learned how to salsa when I was 16 (I am now in my early twenties). I know the basic steps, and some variations on that (i.e. side stepping, etc.) The woman I trained under is a professional salsa dancer and musician who has received formal training from other dancers.

Spanish

I have been speaking Spanish for approximately nine years. I took four years of Spanish in high school, and my minor in college (at UW-Superior) was Spanish. I have traveled to two Spanish speaking countries: Costa Rica and Mexico (in Mexico, I studied abroad for two weeks and translated between English and Spanish). I worked at a Spanish language camp during the summer of 2012. I also have Spanish speaking friends from several different countries.

Study Skills

At my university, I worked as a tutor for 2+ years. I generally tutored subjects such as English and math, but I also assisted in giving study tips to students as well. Having been a student myself for so long, I have tried a wide variety of study methods too, so I feel confident I can help others with effective study methods.

Writing

I worked at my university's writing center for about a year and a half. I helped with many subjects and students from diverse backgrounds for punctuation, spelling, citing sources, etc.

Knows very well how to make the subject interesting!!! — Ms. Sarah tutored elementary English to my 4th grade son, with a focus on improving his writing skills. In two months, he improved his grade from C to A+ with 1 hr class per week. I am not only happy to see his better grades, but also pleased to see his interest in improving his writing skills. When I was planning to hire her, there was not much student feedback about her skills, but I had a s ...
