About Wesley

I truly enjoy helping others not only learn new information, but also understand the information, especially in the hard sciences. I think that a lot of people get bogged down in science, because they never had it explained to them in a way that made sense to them. That's where I really exceed with my students. I employ multiple techniques to teach my students, and adapt my strategy to how I see them respond to it.

My tutoring experience is centered around my job at my university as a supplementary instruction leader and tutor. I spend a lot of time, outside of my actual face-to-face hours, preparing materials for my students, including worksheets, practice quizzes and tests, and note sheets. My general teaching method revolves around the use of the Socratic method. Which essentially is just by the formulation and answering of questions. I use this and Bloom's taxonomy to develop questions that test different levels of learning. I like to challenge my students, but I never overwhelm them with material. When they don't understand a new concept, I've realized that it might not be that they just don't understand, rather it usually has to do with a gap in their foundational knowledge, that builds on the new concept. I identify this, then solidify that foundation and work our way back up to the new concept at hand. This leads to a higher level of learning and not just a memorization.

I have excelled above the level of most of my peers in my science classes, especially, in biochemistry, biology, and microbiology. This means that I know how to study well for these classes, and that I understand the material much better than a lot of others.

I graduated with top marks in my high school writing glasses, and my college writing class. Additionally, I have written many highly graded papers including persuasive, informational, and scholarly articles and essays. My writing always receives positive feedback from my professors and peers. On a frequent basis, I am asked to critique and review my peers writing, because my knowledge of the subject is incredibly high. On the writing portion of the ACT I scored 11/12 each of the two times that I took it.

If you're having a hard time finding science interesting, struggling with a difficult concept, or need coaching on how to write, then I'm the tutor you need. Also, I am a lab researcher (one in a drug development lab & one in cell culture lab), founder of two major on-campus clubs (Pre-Medicine Club & Concordia Against Cancer), an EMT-Basic (work for the FD), peer mentor, and a zip line tour guide! So if you are interested in any of these things, or are looking for connections for a future in healthcare, as either a pre-med or pre-PA student, then I'm definitely the tutor/mentor that you need.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
