About Barbara

I have taught for over 20 years and have loved each year! I have taught every grade from preschool to 12th grade.

I have Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Exceptional Education and have had many years of experience with special needs students and adults

I majored in Exceptional Education; I am licensed to teach hearing impaired children and am fluent in sign language.

I taught 7th & 8th grade English and Writing at Calvary Lutheran School for two years.

Through my 20+ years of teaching I have tutored some of my students and even some of my neighbor's children. My goal as a teacher has always been for children to be able to master their goal and it has been my job to get the child/ren to that goal using whatever strategy I can. I have always had the philosophy that every child can learn given the right teaching strategy.

I am a very determined teacher, working endless hours for her students. I look at each student's strengths and find out how he or she learns on the first day I visit. This not only will help her or him, but will help me in teaching your student. This has been very beneficial to children who have been diagnosed with special needs such as ADD, ADHD as well as others.

I have tutored children who have had difficulty with memorizing multiplication tables so we came up with rhymes, songs and raps

I believe tutoring is an extension from teaching that I have been doing for the last 20 + years. Tutoring is working with a student 1:1 and often making it more enjoyable for the student since there are fewer constraints. I hope you give me a chance to help your child help themselves.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught elementary grades for 2 years as a teacher and have tutored elementary grades for 5 years. I am very familiar with children in this age level and their curriculums.

Sign Language

Since my license was teaching hearing impaired children, I learned sign language. I even dreamt in sign language because I knew it so well. I have since taught sign language to my hearing classes when I have not taught hearing impaired children. It a joy of mine.

Special Needs

I have both a Master's and a Bachelor's degree in exceptional education. I understand special needs children and have a passion for this type of teaching. I especially prefer the 1:1 or small group setting where I can get to know the student' s type of learning and and adapt my teaching to their needs.

Study Skills

I have been a tutor for three years and have taught several students reading skills, math skills, and study skills. Study skills are very important when a child has a learning disability or is not doing well in school overall.
