A recipient of state, national and international writing awards, I was employed as a newspaper editor for many years, helping to mold dozens of young reporters into respected members of the Fourth Estate. Now retired, I would like to kindle the passions of other young writers by passing along the knowledge I've gained over the years, both in classrooms and bustling newsrooms. I've held nearly every writing position, from cub reporter (immediately after college) to managing editor. Like the rest of society, computers have transformed newspapers, yet for all of their blessings, they have a downside: editors now tend to rewrite in secret, and aspiring writers are the poorer for it. I won't let that happen. You will always know why changes are necessary. If you work with me, you will do lots of writing, adhering to Associated Press style rules.

Once I determine your current writing level, I'll work patiently and passionately with you, teaching you, among many other things, to choose your words with precision, to avoid redundancy, to shun sesquipedalian words when garden varieties will do quite nicely, and to be wary of over-the-top punctuation (fine writers can go a lifetime and never use an exclamation point). Words are like musical notes: they make sounds on paper (and computer screens). You will learn to read your work aloud before submitting it to me. Do you hear a symphony or a cacophony? My job is to elevate your writer's voice to one of distinction. Please feel free to contact me to learn more about my professional qualifications and to share your writing ambitions.

Grammar,

Grammar

No one should ever have to read a sentence twice because of the way it's constructed. I've found, when editing copy, that the surest way to detect grammatical errors is to "listen to the music." Read your work aloud. Do you hear a symphony or a cacophony? Grammatical errors will disrupt the melody of your writing.
Proofreading

Proofreading

As an editor, I taught reporters to proofread and rewrite their copy until they owned every word and punctuation mark. How many times? You'll know. Ernest Hemingway rewrote the ending of "A Farewell to Arms" 38 times. Rewrite your work until it flows from thought to thought without stumbling.

Vocabulary

Fine writing begins with an unflagging love of words, what they mean and how they are used. Repetition is the mother of study. If you're enamored of certain words, as I am, use them until they're a permanent part of your vocabulary. But beware: the simplest word is often the best choice.

English

English

I have been in the language business all of my adult life, mostly at newspapers, but also as director of communications in the corporate arena. Tutoring English is the very essence of an editor's job. I've helped many reporters and business executives learn to write in a confident, distinguished voice.

Very responsive and prompt, patient and good with words.

Thank you for editing the essay last minute and making it all come together so well considering the topic. Really appreciate your prompt response. Will do another essay soon! Thanks Sean

Knowledgeable and Patient

This is my first session with Gary. English is my second language and I struggle with writing - simply did not know where to start to enhance my writing. Gary asked me to submit one or more samples of writing before the class so that he knows where I am at. It worked well. We edited/rewrote my writing during the first part of the class. In the second part of the class, he talked about the rhythm of the writing, mixing long and short sentences to make writing flow better and introduced the concept of writing style. I am confident that over time I will see noticeable improvements by working with him.

Knowledgeable, patient and dedicated tutor

My high school kid started tutor sessions with Mr. Gary very recently, and we're already very impressed with how knowledgeable and dedicated Mr. Gary is. He has the student's best interests in mind and is very well prepared ahead of lessons. He read my kid's sample essays, and precisely diagnosed strengths and weaknesses, followed by an on-target lesson plans. He sent us extra materials throughout the week for writing tips and ideas. In addition to being professional and dedicated, Mr. Gary is also very patient and kind, encouraging my student along the way. With his expertise and experience as a writer/reporter, I feel my kid is in good hands to get the needed writing help. I can clearly see how passionate Mr. Gary is about writing and teaching. He truly wants his students to become better writers in the future.
