About Esther

I am a hopeful teacher of English as a Second/Foreign language. I graduated from the University of Phoenix in 2017 with a Bachelor of Arts in English and a 3.8 GPA. I have also earned my TEFL certification, and CELTA certification, with more than 120 hours in-class and 120 hours online. I have about a semester's worth of tutoring experience, both at the elementary, high school, and college level, and have about 30 total hours of ESL tutoring experience. I have worked frequently with adult learners, but I would love more opportunities to work with young learners as well.

I love working with language, but more importantly, I hope to provide a positive, supportive atmosphere that will enable students to discover their own learning style and experiment with language. Combining these interests led me to the ESL field, but I love traditional English literature as well.

Please do feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. We can schedule a trial lesson to see if I am a good match for your learning style. I am now living in the Rhinelander/Northwoods area and am willing to adjust my schedule to accommodate potential students. I look forward to working with you. Thank you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have completed approximately 62% of my Bachelor of Arts in English, and currently hold a GPA of 3.92 with the University of Phoenix. I have also taken many relevant English courses through two different universities that pertain to English, literature, and grammar.

ESL/ESOL

I am currently working towards my TEFL certification, which I expect to earn within six months. I primarily adhere to the ESA (Engage Study Activate) teaching method advanced by Jeremy Harmer, but I am always open to new techniques and possibilities.

Proofreading

I often peer-edit with fellow group members through the University of Phoenix. I also often take the lead in these cooperative writing projects, and compile and edit the paper in question for the entire group. I also write and proof-read my own papers on a consistent basis and am well-versed in MLA formatting.

Reading

I scored a 33/36 in the Reading portion of the ACT test, taken in June 2011. Since then, I have improved my reading comprehension skills as I have taken literature classes in college. I read "classic" literature on a consistent basis for my classes and so am well-versed in that area.

Vocabulary

I currently hold a 3.92 GPA with the University of Phoenix online and have completed 62% of my Bachelor of Arts in English. As such, I have taken many literature classes and come across a wide variety of vocabulary. I read often, particularly various selections from the "classics," in which advanced vocabulary is a frequent occurrence.

Writing

I have been writing for many years through my schoolwork, so I am particularly proficient with academic writing. I am most familiar with the MLA formatting style. I often peer-edit with fellow adult learners through the University of Phoenix.
