UW Whitewater (Elem. Ed. N-3rd Gr.)
For 32 years I have taught children ranging from K-4 thru 3rd grade. For the past few years I have been the RtI (Title 1) reading teacher. I worked with individuals and small groups. I taught phonics, guided reading, & phonemic awareness. I used inspiring lessons to challenge children to grow to their full potential. I implemented direct instruction, RAZ Kids, Reading A-Z, SuperKids, and guided reading strategies. My primary focus was on phonics, vocabulary, decoding & comprehension.
As our school library teacher, I'd incorporate state standards in reading through the use of literature. I enjoy teaching children! I was told by my students "You are the best teacher ever!" I can't get a better endorsement than that.
For nineteen years I've taught first grade students how to read. I know the procedures involved in the reading process and how to implement them. I've used guided reading, reading for a purpose, use of prior knowledge, sequencing events, context clues, and recalling details to help children understand what they have read. I have seen the reading pendulum swing from the whole language approach back to phonics. Since I've taught K-4 thru 3rd grade I know the standards for each grade level.
I will share with your child the process he/she needs to walk-through to become a proficient reader. I will use phonemic awareness, alliteration, rhyming, understanding letter/sound association( phonics), word families, and decoding skills.
I love my students and they love me! I am thrilled when they have the "aha moment" and really take off in their reading. I love books and want them to love reading too. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
