About Karland

I really enjoy helping students understand physics and mathematics! I have over twelve years of experience teaching physics at the undergraduate level. After completing a postdoctoral position at U of MN-Twin Cities and my doctoral degree at U of IL-Urbana Champaign, I discovered my love for teaching. I have taught general physics courses to engineering, life-science, and industrial studies majors, as well as working as a teaching assistant at UIUC.

I find it very helpful to analyze a student's current understanding to see where problems and challenges are. It is very rewarding to me to have students reach that "aha" moment when they grasp a particular concept. My students learn how to take a physics quiz or test and the importance of practicing under a time constraint. Besides physics, I also like to tutor high school and early college mathematics.

Extensive use of mathematics in my undergraduate and graduate studies.

Earned a Ph.D. in physics from U of IL at Urbana-Champaign and taught general physics for over twelve years at the undergraduate level.

If you need help in physics and mathematics, I look forward to hearing from you and scheduling a lesson.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have extensive experience with high school mathematics, including Algebra 1.

English

I am a native English speaker who enjoys grammar and spelling. I scored a perfect 800 in the verbal portion of the general GRE. In college, I took several classes that required substantial written essays for credit. While in Washington, DC, I tutored a young student in ESL.

Geometry

I have extensive experience working with mathematics. I enjoy all levels of high school mathematics and employed mathematics daily in earning my Ph.D. in computational physics. In college, I tutored students in the first semester of calculus.

Physics

I have over twelve years of experience in teaching general physics at the undergraduate level. I earned a Ph.D. in computational physics from U of IL at Urbana-Champaign and a B.A. in physics from Saint Olaf College. I have received positive evaluations for my teaching abilities at UW-Platteville.

Prealgebra

I have extensive experience working with mathematics. I enjoy all levels of high school mathematics and employed mathematics daily in earning my Ph.D. in computational physics. In college, I tutored students in the first semester of calculus.

Study Skills

I earned a B.A. in physics from Saint Olaf College and a Ph.D. in computational physics from U of IL at Urbana-Champaign. In college I tutored students in calculus through the college academic support center. I have also taught undergraduate physics for over twelve years. Teaching physics at the undergraduate level allows me to assist students with preparation and test taking abilities for physics exams. I am very patient and enjoy finding a variety of ways to explain a concept.
