About Sam

I love tutoring math to students at all levels from elementary math through college level calculus as well as physics and general chemistry. My goal is to make learning an enjoyable experience for my students, working to help them reach their full potential. I have the ability to make what seems difficult and complex easily understood.

My experience includes tutoring at the Omega School in Madison plus over 700 hours tutoring with WyzAnt.

I received my BS from Northwestern University with Highest Distinction in engineering with the equivalent of a math major. I also have an MS degree in engineering from Stanford and an MBA from Harvard.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

To help my students prepare for math portion of the ACT, I have them work with sample ACT Math tests. I can then determine those areas that are giving them difficulty for us to explore further.

ACT Science

I have my ACT Science students work with sample ACT Science tests. I can then determine those areas that are giving them difficulty for us to explore further.

Algebra 2

In teaching Advanced Algebra and Precalculus, I cover the following topics with the student:
1.Review of Word Problems and Dimensional Analysis
2.Linear and Quadratic Functions
3.Polynomial and Rational Functions
4.Exponential and Logarithmic Functions Including e, the Bases of the Natural Logarithm
5.Sequences and Series
6.Complex Numbers
7.Trigonometric Functions
8.Introduction to Differential and Integral Calculus

Where possible, I use the student's own text book as this basis for teaching the above. Otherwise, I can provide teaching material.

ASVAB

I have my ASVAB students work with sample ASVAB tests in those areas that they need to learn. We can then determine which areas that are giving them difficulty for us to explore further.

Business

I am a Harvard MBA and have been CEO of three organizations.

Calculus

Prior to beginning Calculus, I review the student's understanding of geometry, advanced algebra, polynomials, and trigonometry.

We then move to:

1. the derivative and applications involving the derivative
2. the integral and applications involving the integral
3. exponential and logarithmic functions including the natural logarithm
4. trigonometric and hyperbolic functions.

I use the student's own text book and tailor my tutoring to the student's needs.

Chemistry

I have tutored many online Chemistry students, AP Chemistry students from local high schools and college level Chemistry with students at the University of Wisconsin - Madison and Madison College.

Elementary Math

I have very successfully worked with many middle school students to improve their elementary math skills. My goal is always to improve their confidence in the subject and help them learn to enjoy math.

Elementary Science

I have worked with many middle school students to help them successfully improve their elementary science skills.

I have 300 hours of WyzAnt tutoring experience in these subjects plus prior tutoring of math, science and verbal reasoning at a school in Madison. I am also familiar with life science having worked in the medical products industry for fourteen years.

Mechanical Engineering

I hold a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Northwestern University that I received with Highest Distinction. I also have an MS in Engineering Mechanics from Stanford University. I have managed an engineering department and have been involved throughout my career with the design, manufacture and sale of engineered products.

Microsoft Excel

I have been using Microsoft Excel in my business since it was first introduced and Lotus 123 before that.

Physics

I have tutored many Physics students online as well as AP Physics students from local high schools and Advanced Physics students from the University of Wisconsin - Madison and Madison College.

Precalculus

Prior to beginning Pre-Calculus, I review the student's understanding of geometry, advanced algebra, polynomials, coordinate geometry and graphical analysis and trigonometry.

We then move to:

1. exponential and logarithmic functions including the natural logarithm.
2. trigonometric and hyperbolic functions.
3. the derivative and applications involving the derivative
4. the integral and applications involving the integral.

I use the student's own text book along with materials that I have used successfully in the past and tailor my tutoring to the student's needs.

SAT Math

I have my SAT Math students work from sample SAT Math tests. We can then determine those area that are giving difficulty for us to explore further.
