I have a considerable amount of teaching experience, mostly at the elementary level, having been a G/T teacher for over 20 years. During that time, I created curriculum and used a variety of teaching methods. I worked with small groups and individual students on a regular basis. I have done remedial instructing as well as supplemental or enrichment teaching. I consider myself well-versed in most subject areas. I have been an adjunct math instructor at FVTC in Appleton and NWTC in Green Bay. I also served as an instructor in the basic skills lab at NWTC. Additionally, I taught driver education behind-the-wheel during the summer for over 20 years. I relate well with students of all ages.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have over 30 years of experience in teaching elementary education and have taught all core subjects. I have used many types of methods to teach both remedial and enrichment classes. I worked with small groups of students as well as individual students.
I feel qualified to teach most subjects at the elementary level. I taught every grade level from K through 6th at one time or another over the course of my career. Very few teachers have done that. I have passed the tests for all of the subjects listed for tutoring positions. I have a math/science minor and taught those two subjects extensively for many years. Math is a favorite for me, and many topics in science still fascinate me. For example, I am an avid bird enthusiast. Reading is one of my hobbies and is needed for studying every subject. Phonics and vocabulary are vital components of any reading program, including those that I taught at the elementary level. I am constantly correcting spelling errors that I find in email messages. Spelling is best taught in context. My hand writing is very neat, and I consider it an important skill. I have used several methods to teach handwriting. I am fussy about the proper use of grammar and surprised when seemingly intelligent people misuse it. Grammar falls within the parameters of reading instruction for me. Study skills enable students to learn and make progress in any subject area. I have helped students to acquire these skills because they permeate and facilitate all learning. I have been able to find curriculum that meets the needs of individual students in every subject listed here. My teaching certificate from the Wisconsin DPI covers all subjects taught at the elementary level (K - 6th).
I have taught handwriting for several years during my elementary teaching career. I have used different methods to teach it and am comfortable with the subject. I have neat hand writing and consider it an important skill.
I am qualified to teach phonics at the elementary level. I taught reading classes for 14 years of my teaching career, and phonics was incorporated into the curriculum of every reading series.
My extensive teaching experience certainly qualifies me to handle tutoring study skills. I have taught study skills in a variety of elementary and college settings. These can be incorporated into almost any lesson.
