I know what it feels like to know what you want to say, but it just isn't coming out right. All the information in your brain refuses to come out properly. If you are writing a paper, you go completely blank or all your ideas run around on the page and refuse to get organized. If you are trying to hold an adult conversation in your new language, the words you know disappear, leaving you pointing and sounding like a child. I have the academic background and the real life experience to understand your challenges and help you reduce your frustration.

A Ph.D. in adult reading, a secondary teaching credential in Spanish and English, certification in English as a second language, and USCIS Citizenship exam training inform my teaching. My career as a technical writer and work as an editor have given me detailed knowledge of techniques for writing academic and business papers. It does not have to be hard, and I can show you ways to make it easier. I have worked with a wide range of adult English language learners trying to navigate life and work in English, and can help your achieve your objectives for communicating in English, and for taking the USCIS exams for citizenship, if that is your goal.

Now retired from corporate life, I can spend my time helping each student achieve their individual communication goals by teaching community college English, tutoring on Wyzant, and teaching ESL and Citizenship as a social services volunteer. This is what I love to do!

ESL/ESOL

I know how frustrating it is to live and go to college and work in a different language because I have been there. Together, we will define your goals and a plan to accomplish them. Some of you will want to work on writing, some of you will want intensive work on pronunciation, and some of you will want to move through the basics, including those crazy English verbs. I have taught ESL/ESOL for many years to adult learners in corporate settings for job performance improvement, through the Peace Corps, as a community service volunteer, and currently in community college. I have a Ph.D. in adult reading, a credential in English as a Second Language, and a Secondary Teaching Credential for teaching English and Spanish. I would love to help you, no matter what your goals or starting level.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary

As a technical writer consultant, I have had to quickly expand my vocabulary in every which way just to get my job done in every new corporate consulting assignment. Writing short fiction has given me new avenues of vocabulary expansion. And teaching ESL requires me to try out multiple English words to help my students understand a concept. All of this to say that I am an experienced vocabulary grower, and would love to give you strategies and exercises to grow your own vocabulary.

I am a retired technical writer with lots of experience in actually "doing writing". I will provide in-text editing and comments on your work, and explain my edits and comments in terms of practical application to your writing and information that will help you be a better writer. I have been editing college and grad school papers for over 20 years. I have taught English at all levels, including college and corporate training, and now teach English in community college.

USCIS

With certification and experience in teaching English as a second language (ESL), and with USCIS Citizenship Exam training and experience, I am very knowledgeable about all four components of USCIS citizenship preparation. Teaching adult English language learners how to practice for the USCIS reading and writing tests is a natural extension of teaching ESL. The personal interview and the civics test require intensive practice so you can remember how to say the information in clear English. The reading and writing tests also require practice in order to read and write with correct spelling and punctuation. My goal is to help each student gain confidence in themselves that they can pass the USCIS exams.

Great Tutor!

Kate was proactive in communicating with me on scheduling the session. Knowing that I was new to Wyzant, she gave me a thorough walk-through in terms of what to expect. She also did well in editing and suggesting potential parts of my paper. Instead of suggesting and editing my paper, she actually complimented the parts that I did well, which was a booster on my confidence. Thank you, Kate!

great teacher

She took my dad's mock interview for citizenship. It was really helpful. My dad got some idea where need to work more before go to real interview. She gave us 45 minutes but she charge us only 30 minutes. That's really nice of her. She will teach you like a family person not a commercial. She took interview give him some feedback within this time. After the call she emailed me all details where my dad need to work. She is best. If anyone looking for citizenship mock interview for your parents i will highly recommend her. She will make them rEady for interview.
