About Anthony

A love of the German language was sparked for me when I went to Germany with an exchange group in 11th grade. Following that I attended a German high school for one year and then the University of Bonn for one year. Following that I was awarded a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship to Belgium, where I worked on tightening my knowledge of the Dutch language as well.

I regularly take student groups to Germany and love everything about the language and all of its intricacies. I have taught German in a public high school for 11 years and was the PTSA Teacher of the Year in our school for 2013. I have a genuine love and enthusiasm for German culture and language that has motivated many of my students to go on and select careers that use German, and I have even had students win gold and silver medals on the nationwide National German Exam. I have taught all levels of German, from introductory classes all the way up through International Baccalaureate level classes. My summers are spent tutoring students, so I am also used to methods and strategies to help students best learn when I don't see them everyday in a classroom.

Teaching takes up a lot of time and energy in my life, but outside of school I have many other interests. I enjoy traveling, both internationally and inside the United States and I am a big soccer, baseball, and basketball fan. I love animals, especially dogs, and I have two adorable pugs at home. I am a runner as well-I have run three half marathons in the last two years and am toying with the idea of doing a full marathon.

My experience living and going to school in Germany for two years and Belgium for one year make me uniquely qualified to teach German and Dutch as second languages--neither language is my native language--I had to put in a massive amount of time and effort living in Germany and then Belgium to learn them. Therefore I understand the difficulties that Americans have with these languages in a way a native speaker would not. I am regularly complimented by native German speakers that they could not tell I was not a native speaker. I set EXTREMELY high standards for myself--I would never trust a student with anyone who was not a fluent master of the language and all of its grammatical ins and outs.

Germany occupies an important position in Europe and in the world, and a knowledge of the German language opens many doors to those who have experience with it. Making extra money tutoring is great, but I genuinely LOVE the language and it makes me feel so good to pass that love on. I can guarantee that you will not find another tutor who commands the language in the way that I do. I would be thrilled to work with anyone, no matter what skill level, who would like to learn it/become better in spoken and or written German or Dutch. Please get in touch!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Dutch

I spent a year studying at the University of Bonn in Germany where I first started taking Dutch classes. I found the language and its similarities and differences from German fascinating, so I knew I wanted to continue to do more with it. After that I spent a year living in Antwerp, Belgium as a Fulbright Scholar. During my time there I worked with the University of Antwerp and the HIVT (Hoger Instituut voor Vertalers en Tolken) teaching English and working on my Dutch language skills. I love learning new languages and I take them very seriously, especially the grammatical facets of languages. I have a great amount of tutoring experience, mainly with students wanting to learn German, but these methods obviously carry over to Dutch as well.
