Once, I took a test to determine my strengths and how I could best use them to serve those around me; "positivity", "developer", "belief", "input", and "empathy" ranked as my top five. While I'm usually a skeptic when it comes to personality tests, I believe that my results accurately reflect who I am as a servant leader in my home, school, church, and community.
Simply put, I love helping people, and I love watching them grow beyond their wildest beliefs. I'm not afraid to ask for perfection or push my students beyond their comfort zones so that they can achieve more than they thought possible. However, I also have a passion for making learning fun; it actually causes me pain when I see people bored, disengaged, or apathetic in their work! For this reason, I strive to create passion and positivity in others for learning and life so that they're able to best use their gifts to serve those around them.
I recently spent 6 weeks in Chile serving as an assistant to ESL teachers; through this experience, I learned how to plan lessons, connect information to students' lives, and vary instruction to make it rewarding and fun. In addition, I am a proficient Spanish speaker after my years of study towards my Spanish minor, and I strive to learn more every day. I am also currently looking into options to obtain my ESL teaching certification.
During my 3 years as a full-time summer camp counselor and 4 years as a volunteer junior counselor, I have learned more about children than I ever hoped. Living with elementary-aged children has given me the experience I need to build relationships with them and engage them in learning. I have also tutored multiple children in this age range, and the results prove positive each time due to my emphasis on problem-solving and character-building.
Music is my life: from singing in ensembles to accompanying soloists to teaching music classes to learning, practicing, and performing, my major in Wide-Range Music Education has given me a lot of experience in learning and teaching music. I began learning piano at the age of 6 and have sung as long as I can remember; I have studied under multiple teachers in both piano and voice, and am developing my pedagogy skills through taking techniques classes and giving lessons.
As I mentioned in my K-6th qualifications, I work at a summer camp--it was there that I was introduced to working with adults with special needs. I was hooked after a week, and from there I joined my high school's club and became an executive board member for an organization (Best Buddies) where we paired students with different abilities as tutors, letter-writers, and, most importantly, friends. Since then, I take every opportunity to serve people with special needs, and I am loving a current tutoring job that I have where I work with a middle school boy with learning disabilities. We have learned so much from each other, and I love pushing him to success when adults in his life said that he'd never succeed.
As you can see, I want to help you, and I have the qualifications and passion to do so. I look forward to creating a teaching, learning, and fun-having relationship with you and/or your child. Please contact me with any question or for a primary consultation to determine whether my services are right for you. I can't wait to begin learning!
