About Elaine

Thank you for taking an interest in working with me. I offer Academic Coaching, which is a one-on-one or small group service designed to help students build study skills such as reading comprehension, note taking, time management, goal setting, organization, basic writing skills, test preparation, and test-taking strategies. I am also qualified to help students cope with more personal issues such as test anxiety, low self-efficacy or confidence, and disability, including learning disabilities, ADHD, and physical and mental health conditions. I am a licensed Special Education Assistant in the state of Wisconsin as well as a Permit-based Substitute Teacher in Wisconsin.

I offer private academic coaching to college, high school, and middle school students within the Milwaukee Area. Coaching is a personalized service which is customized to the specific needs of the student. The first coaching session will be an initial assessment where I will ascertain the students skill levels, discuss their specific concerns, and work with the student and parent or guardian to create a customized plan of action. All sessions following the initial assessment will be focused on skill building and students will often be required to complete assignments between sessions to practice skills. My clients usually come in two types, those who just need a few hours of coaching over a few weeks time to work on specific areas, and those who need a longer term commitment and accountability week-to-week.

My Qualifications

I have a MS in Higher Education Administration specializing in academic services, instructional design, and adult learning. My BA is in Biology, specializing in psychology and animal behavior. I have 3 years of part-time experience academic coaching undergraduate students and assisting with the development of the academic coaching program at a local university. I have been coaching privately for 2 years (as of January 2017).

I believe academic coaching is a service students at all levels can benefit from and I truly believe that most students who don't like learning and struggle to be successful in traditional academic environments have underdeveloped study skills which make keeping up in the traditional classroom difficult. By improving these skills, students will also gain confidence and feel more comfortable seeking assistance and advocating for their own needs inside the classroom.

Please contact me with any questions about my services or to schedule a coaching session. I look forward to meeting you, or your minor student, and addressing their specific academic concerns.

Please be aware of the following policies (as of February 7th, 2017):
Cancellation Policy: 4 hours notice is required for all cancelations. Students who fail to meet this requirement will be charged for missed lessons.

Session length: Standard lessons are 1 hour, with the option to extend sessions up to to 2 hours for adult student only.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I am a WI state licensed Special Education Assistant with 1 year experience working with students K-12 with various disabilities including ADD/ADHD.

Biology

I have earned a BA in Biology with Honors. My personal areas of interest include animal behavior, evolution, ecology, and population genetics. In college I studied the social spacing patterns of gorillas and chimpanzees.

College Counseling

I have a Masters in Higher Education Administration from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee which gives me an in-depth understanding of the issues related to college admissions. In addition, I have successfully completed the college and graduate school admissions process personally, and have assisted classmates and friends in applying for graduate school.

Study Skills

I am a current Academic Coach, at a local University, who specializes in helping undergraduate students develop skills in test taking, note taking, reading comprehension, time management, goal setting, and academic anxiety. Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Elaine is doing a great job helping my teenage son get organized and sharpen his study skills. She believes in not only helping him develop skills, but try to understand why he makes the decisions he makes. Very glad we found her!
