About Guy

I am an experienced science tutor with the capability to help you succeed academically by not only describing easy ways to remember complex processes, but also with study skills and self-learning strategies. I have regularly tutored students in K12 (as young as 7th grade) through high level college courses.

For students considering health care careers my years of experience working as a scientist at a medical/dental school directly with professors on Admissions Committees has provided me unique and valuable insights into the best strategies and tactics to maximize your chance of matriculation. I can help brainstorm personal essays, coach you on question strategies and teach the difference between an acceptable answer and a great answer during an interview. I can also support MCAT, DAT and GRE test preparation.

Significant coursework in biology (microbiology, biochemistry, evolution, anatomy, human physiology, many others) and chemistry (to organic chemistry). High scholastic ability garnered from hard work, not natural ability - with significant effort I scored in the 90th percentile for the dental school admissions exam (DAT). I can show you how I learned what to do and the steps I took!

I conducted dental materials research for 5 years at Oregon Health and Science University School of Dentistry. I worked for the Department of Restorative dentistry under Dr. Jack Ferracane (among many other professors) and my time in that environment has provided to me unique understanding of what dental and medical schools are looking for in applicants to professional programs.

Beyond my skills in science I am a great role model. My work history has had wide variation (from commercial boat captain to laboratory scientists and much in between) giving me the ability to provide valuable perspective on career decisions and the important reasons to do great academically.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Dentistry

I conducted dental materials research for 5 years at Oregon Health and Science University School of Dentistry. I worked for the Department of Restorative dentistry under Dr. Jack Ferracane (among many other professors) and my time in that environment has provided to me unique understanding of what dental and medical schools are looking for in applicants to professional programs.

Furthermore, I have successfully tutored numerous students who did matriculate to professional school programs. I helped them draft personal essays, coached them on interview questions and directed their course of studies for optimal chances of matriculation.

Finally, I was accepted as an alternate for University of Washington Dental School and have personally attended a number of dental school interviews.

Genetics

My work as a researcher involved the genetic manipulations of various organisms. As a scientist I along with my colleague generated multiple strains of transgenic animals for use in medical research. These animals were true breeding organisms, chimeras of fish, human eye protein, jellyfish bioluminescence genes. This work took significant understanding of genetics at a fundamental level.

I have also created various strains of bioluminescent oral bacteria in order to quantify the antimicrobial effects of bioactive glass and other experimental dental materials.

Organic Chemistry

I scored 22 on the organic chemistry section of the Dental Admissions Test (approximately ~90th percentile).

I took organic chemistry (3 terms) and laboratory sections during undergraduate.

Great tutor, has a lot of experience working with college classes, workload, Biology concepts and questions, and science in general. Seems like he really wants his students to be successful for the future and improve their grades quickly. Had one session so far and learned good tips.
