University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee (Sociology-Africology)
I graduated from the University of WI-Milwaukee with a B.A. as a double major in Sociology and Africology. I worked in the Milwaukee Public School system for 13 years, mainly at the elementary level. During this time I worked with a very diverse population ranging from 3 year old to high school students. I've worked with students with special skills to students with special needs. Having spent several years at the elementary level, I have a comfortable grasp of the material in all subjects. As a tutor I believe it is my job to help students become more confident and secure in their abilities. I also want them to understand that school can be fun and rewarding with the right attitude and focus. It's all about creating and maintaining the right mindset.
As far as my teaching style is concerned I don't believe in pressuring children, so you will find that my teaching style is very relaxed. However, I do expect my students to always give their best effort possible and make wise use of our time together. I also expect that my students will continue to work on their lessons and skills even on days in which we are not scheduled to meet. I just know it is important that students take an active role in their own learning. To me tutoring is not an event, but instead a process toward progress. Education isn't about putting information into a child, its about helping each individual to bring out the knowledge that is already inside of them. Although I am well qualified, I feel that parents play a very important role in their child's level of achievement as well. I believe that creating a successful student takes a team effort of the student, parents, and educators working together toward a common goal. Parents are the first foundation and the child's initial connection to the world. When it comes to education that initial link remains important to the child's success.
I feel another major key to educational success is setting reasonable and attainable goals. As a tutor it is my job to guide students in the right direction toward setting and achieving those goals. I enjoy working with children and seeing their happiness when they discover that they truly are capable of greatness. I look forward to meeting you, and being a part of the team that can assist your child in reaching their educational goals. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I spent 13 years working in Elementary Education for Milwaukee Public Schools. During this time I worked with both Regular Education and Special Needs students in whole group and one on one settings in a variety of subjects. I taught Direct Instruction Reading for 2 years working primarily with first graders, and saw many students make significant gains in their overall reading ability and comprehension of the material. I have often worked with students who were struggling overall academically in several subjects, and I made it my mission to help them get on level with their peers and give them a sense of accomplishment. Helping students to simply believe in themselves is so critical to their success.
