I volunteered as a GED math tutor at the Literacy Services of Wisconsin on weekends for more than eight years. I still volunteer three times a week at East Brook Church's Neighborhood Learning Center. I am very patient and encourage people to read their math. I want them to notice what a cumulative and self-checking science math is. Subtraction can be checked with addition, division can be checked with multiplication, and techniques learned in fractions appear again in percent, ratios, proportion and conversion factors. I want people to know that if they can read they have the tools they need to do well in math whether they like math or not. Math is full of instructions, examples, formulas, and definitions to be read understood then applied to problems. I tell my students to seek clarity on any part of the literature before working on the problems. I want them to be comfortable and able to use what they've read because that literature and any additional literature I give them are there for them when they are alone. I tell them math is a skill and tool like reading and writing that they can certainly learn. Math is not a big menacing person.

I've been and still am a working chemist for nearly thirty years. Of course, I use math at work it is a very useful tool in many fields. During school I helped family and friends with math. As a working Chemist, I always wondered if there was some way I could give back to the community in a very safe and direct manner. I looked into volunteer opportunities e
