About Nick

Teaching is my passion.

My background allows me to offer help in sales, marketing and business, as well as in World Literature, English, Latin, and other Humanities related areas

I especially love to teach critical thinking, how to read, and skills to improve writing, presentation organization, strategic thinking, facilitating, and public presentation.

My formal education crosses both the Humanities and Business. I have my BA with both an emphasis on Business as well as on Comparative Literature and the classics.

My graduate degree is in Comparative literature. I focused on the Germanic languages, Latin, the art of the novel, structural criticism. I have taught courses in Science Fiction, the Art of the Novel, introduction to latin literature, Existentialism, Middle and Early English, and Dante's Divine Comedy.

My education also took me to some fine Business Graduate Schools. I was fortunate to complete specialized education at Harvard (Activity-based costing, the Service-Profit Chain, The Balanced Scorecard, and the Marketing Gearbox), Wharton (Global Sales and Channel Management), and MIT (Systems Dynamics: the 5th Discipline).

My focus in business is more related to B2B than B2C but many areas of all channels are comfortable. I teach marketing, marketing communications, strategic thinking, systems dynamics, and the issues and principles of integrated data-based sales, marketing and service. I am published in segmentation, CRM & CEM, as well as on competing in the future, the Balanced Scorecard, etc.

During my professional career I also ran a firm that performed certification and accreditation work; and have created and delivered a number of adult-focused courses for the workplace.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have a Masters Degree in Comparative literature. I have also been a teaching fellow and an adjunct at UW-M. My coursework covers literature from Homer through Pynchon, and includes an emphasis on mythology, Ovid, the modern novel, middle and old English literature, old Norse, the classics, Latin and critical thought/philosophy. In addition, I also have helped raise and teach 6 of my own children, some who still are matriculating through grade school and high school.

Marketing

I have spent over 30 years in business, primarily in a sales and marketing capacity. Then I was elevated twice: once to president of a marketing services firm in Detroit and then (twice) as a partner in consulting firms.

Public Speaking

During my career, I have served on several occasions as an adjunct lecturer for the Department of Comparative Literature at UW-M.
More relevant, perhaps, for the business professional is that I have spoken hundreds of times in front of large groups in my capacities in the Performance Management and Marketing arenas. I also have been a featured speaker at numerous functions sponsored by such groups as the AMA, the DMA, NAMA, and other industry groups where I spoke on the speed of change, database marketing issues, the establishment of strategy models, and other related business topics.
