About Deborah

Hello Foreign Languages Students!

I would be glad to show you how to learn with ease (German, French, Latin, Ancient Greek) (or ESL as needed).

My background includes 25+ years of teaching (philosophy, humanities, classics) at colleges, community colleges, high schools and middle schools, and in one-on-one settings. I have also worked for a number of years in the field of translation (German, French to English), as a writer/editor (philosophy, theology & humanities) and in the foreign language translation software business (localization) and the field of translation management. Recent consulting on curriculum planning (German for Business) and use of software in conjunction with teaching (in class, or on-line) has kept me abreast of new developments in language pedagogy and also made me more aware of the needs of adult learners.

Working with students of all ages is thoroughly enjoyable. Language learning takes some time and patience, but there are also more and less intelligent ways to go about it. I tend to be fairly conservative where methods are concerned because I was educated in part in Europe. I focus on grammatical explanations and practice exercises, reading, listening comprehension, speaking and writing (in this order, and in clearly defined stages) as a complete project because I believe students need to develop in all of these areas from the start. People generally tell me that they have good learning experiences in my classes/tutorial sessions and come away with increased levels of skill, greater confidence in their ability to direct their own learning, and often an interest in learning still other languages.

Please feel free to contact me if you'd like further information, have questions or would just like to chat.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

My background includes 25+ years of teaching and tutoring. I very much enjoy working with students of all ages and have helped many learners, both young people and adults, to develop better skills in all areas of English (conversational English, public speaking and business English and presentations reading comprehension and essay and report writing). Generally this multi-pronged approach produces excellent results quickly. Students come away with greater confidence in their learning abilities and and enhanced awareness of the importance of clear and correct verbal communication.

As for educational background, my degrees are in philosophy (MA Georgetown, A.B.D. Marquette) with a secondary concentration in languages (Latin, Greek, German, French). I have worked as a writer/editor and translator for many years concurrent with teaching and tutoring.

Greek

Hello,
I have taught and tutored Ancient Greek for 5 years, including university classes, high school students and one-on-one adult courses. My background includes numerous years of study and translation of this language. I use it regularly in my research and have also traveled to Greece in conjunction with study.
To be clear, however, I teach only the scholarly languages (Attic Greek and Koine), not Demotic (modern Greek).
For Greek study, traditional methods exist and are well defined. I use Chase and Phillips (textbook) and also draw on Athenaze (vols 1-3) and Morice's Greek stories to supplement the text. This generally suffices to move students to a good level of basic and intermediate Greek reading. Certain texts of Plato (Apology, selections from Crito and Phaedo) are also accessible but only after the intermediate level texts have been thoroughly worked through and the basics of style understood.
