I have spent the last several years as a full-time tutor, spending thousands of hours working with hundreds of students across a wide range of subjects. I tutor primarily with ACT (all sections), SAT (all sections), high school and college level math (Pre-Calculus, Trigonometry, Geometry, Algebra 1/2, etc.), and science (Chemistry and Physics). My goal throughout my time with a student is to make their learning fun and build their confidence in their abilities at the same time. I graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in Engineering and a Certificate in Business.
I tailor each session to a student's particular needs, and no two students will have the same experience. For ACT and SAT prep, I start by working each student through each section so I can assess their strengths and weaknesses in order to find what areas our time will be best spent on. Because of my familiarity with the tests, I can identify which topics are likely to show up the most and will be most critical for a student to be comfortable with. With over 20 practice test to work from, I have an immense amount of material for students to work through on their own and get the most of our sessions. For the ACT, I have worked with a wide range of students, from those looking to get a 36 to those looking to break into the 20's. I have also had success with many students with various forms of learning disabilities like ADHD.
When working with students on schoolwork like Math, Chemistry, and Physics, my focus is on their understanding of the material. If a student does not understand how to arrive at the answer, they are not likely to be able to continue to get problems correct. I therefore focus on the 'how and why' so that students are more prepared for future material and have a stronger foundation when they encounter more complicated topics. If a student needs more practice in a particular area, I am able to make more practice problems to work through.
