Hello I’m Alex. I completed a Bachelor’s of Science in Physics with Specialization in Biophysics at the UC San Diego in 2019. The coursework for my major was multidisciplinary, and included Biology, Chemistry, Math, and Computational Physics in addition to the standard Physics courses. I’ve taken and passed 12 AP exams with fives on Calculus AB, BC, Statistics, and Physics: Mechanics.

During the 2013-2014 school year, I tutored middle school students in an afterschool program in a variety of middle school subjects. From 2014 to 2016 I tutored a few high school students in a one-on-one setting for the AP Calculus AB exam.

My first step when tutoring students is to diagnose which parts of the subject they are struggling with. Some ways I accomplish this are by going through problems to see where they get stuck, asking them to explain the concept to see if their explanation has gaps, or by just asking if they’ve been struggling with any portion in particular. After I know where the student is struggling, I try to reinforce these weak links in their understanding by explaining the concept in a novel way, relating abstract concepts to more tangible examples, and by showing a concept in action in different situations. After, I try to reinforce and assess what they’ve learned by going through additional exercises. If students succeed after this, I use the opportunity to give them positive reinforcement for learning a new concept. If they still struggle, it’s an opportunity to try a different approach in reinforcing their weak links.

I currently charge 35 dollars an hour, and I require a two hour notice before cancelling a lesson. I am open to tutoring in person depending on Covid-19 restrictions.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions, or want to schedule an appointment. I look forward to helping your or your student succeed in their studies, and cultivate a deeper understanding of academic subjects.

MATLAB

MATLAB

I've used MATLAB for numerous different problems in pursuit of my Bachelor's degree and as a research assistant. Some simulations that I've written up in MATLAB include random walks, fluid flow simulations, and Polymer Chain Metropolis Monte Carlo simulations. I've also used it more generally for plotting and analyzing different data sets. My approach to MATLAB tutoring is to help students understand concepts so they understand how to code rather than writing the code for them.

Calculus,

Calculus

As part of my academic career I've taken and used Calculus in multiple contexts. In high school, I took both the AP Calculus AB and BC exams and passed with a 5. I also got a 5 on the AP Physics C: Mechanics calculus based course. I took several additional calculus classes in college including multivariable calculus and differential equations. Calculus is an integral part of the language of physics, so a firm grasp of calculus was indispensable for achieving my Bachelor's of Science in Physics.
Physics

Physics

As part of my Bachelor's, I've completed coursework in Classical Mechanics, Electricity and Magnetism, Waves and Optics, Special Relativity, and Quantum Mechanics among other areas of physics. I also took the AP Physics C: Mechanics exam in high school and passed with a 5.

Knowledgeable & Keeps The Session Interesting

My 9th grader needed some confidence with Physics as the remote learning was proving to be difficult for him. Alexander has continue each week to keep building those blocks for him, so now he's feeling more confident in class & breakrooms.

Effective Teaching Approach & Knowledgeable

Alexander worked with my daughter who is a high school Junior on AP Calculus. He has a calm and patient demeanor and is thoughtful in his teaching approach, making sure to ask questions along the way to understand what the student does and doesn’t understand, in order to help fill in the relevant knowledge gaps. Very helpful and easy to work with!

Excellent!!

Alex is a patient tutor, and very dedicated. He went above and beyond to help my 11th grader prepare for a physics test. We look forward to figure tutoring sessions. Thank you Alex!

Great Physical Science Session

Alexander knew the subject well and was able to explain the concepts in a straightforward way. Since my son can’t physically go to school because of the closure, we will be asking to meet with Alex again to supplement and teach the material that is not effectively being taught now.

Knows the Subject Extremely Well and Patient

Alexander taught me circular motion/gravitation and energy in springs for my AP Physics 1 class. He knows physics very well, is very patient if I don't understand something right away, and is an excellent teacher overall.

Dynamic and MATLAB

knowledgeable and great tutor, I will definitely reach out to him for my future lessons, always answering my questions with detailed answer. He was able to explain things I did not understand and he made sure that I understand the concept and will be able to do them correct.
