Hello I’m Alex. I completed a Bachelor’s of Science in Physics with Specialization in Biophysics at the UC San Diego in 2019. The coursework for my major was multidisciplinary, and included Biology, Chemistry, Math, and Computational Physics in addition to the standard Physics courses. I’ve taken and passed 12 AP exams with fives on Calculus AB, BC, Statistics, and Physics: Mechanics.

During the 2013-2014 school year, I tutored middle school students in an afterschool program in a variety of middle school subjects. From 2014 to 2016 I tutored a few high school students in a one-on-one setting for the AP Calculus AB exam.

My first step when tutoring students is to diagnose which parts of the subject they are struggling with. Some ways I accomplish this are by going through problems to see where they get stuck, asking them to explain the concept to see if their explanation has gaps, or by just asking if they’ve been struggling with any portion in particular. After I know where the student is struggling, I try to reinforce these weak links in their understanding by explaining the concept in a novel way, relating abstract concepts to more tangible examples, and by showing a concept in action in different situations. After, I try to reinforce and assess what they’ve learned by going through additional exercises. If students succeed after this, I use the opportunity to give them positive reinforcement for learning a new concept. If they still struggle, it’s an opportunity to try a different approach in reinforcing their weak links.

I currently charge 35 dollars an hour, and I require a two hour notice before cancelling a lesson. I am open to tutoring in person depending on Covid-19 restrictions.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions, or want to schedule an appointment. I look forward to helping your or your student succeed in their studies, and cultivate a deeper understanding of academic subjects.

MATLAB

My approach to MATLAB tutoring is to help students understand concepts so they understand how to code rather than writing the code for them. When I work with students on programming assignments in general, I find it is best to have short intermittent meetings with them as they need help. We talk about next steps and clarify any material that is unclear before stopping the meeting to let the students attempt to work themselves. I've used MATLAB for numerous different problems in pursuit of my Bachelor's degree and as a research assistant. Some simulations that I've written up in MATLAB include random walks, fluid flow simulations, and Polymer Chain Metropolis Monte Carlo simulations. I've also used it more generally for plotting and analyzing different data sets.

Calculus,

Calculus

As part of my academic career I've taken and used Calculus in multiple contexts. In high school, I took both the AP Calculus AB and BC exams and passed with a 5. I also got a 5 on the AP Physics C: Mechanics calculus based course. I took several additional calculus classes in college including multivariable calculus and differential equations. Calculus is an integral part of the language of physics, so a firm grasp of calculus was indispensable for achieving my Bachelor's of Science in Physics.
Physics,

Physics

As part of my Bachelor's, I've completed coursework in Classical Mechanics, Electricity and Magnetism, Waves and Optics, Special Relativity, and Quantum Mechanics among other areas of physics. I also took the AP Physics C: Mechanics exam in high school and passed with a 5.

Very good tutor

Alexander is knowledgeable and is very patient. He is flexible with the schedule and tries to accommodate changes to the best he can. He is sincere and takes a lot of effort in making sure the material is well understood. He quickly understood the pace in which my daughter can absorb the material and adjusted his teaching accordingly. My daughter found his tutoring very helpful to get a leg up in class.

Effective Teaching Approach & Knowledgeable

Alexander worked with my daughter who is a high school Junior on AP Calculus. He has a calm and patient demeanor and is thoughtful in his teaching approach, making sure to ask questions along the way to understand what the student does and doesn’t understand, in order to help fill in the relevant knowledge gaps. Very helpful and easy to work with!
