University of Wisconsin-Superior (Math and Music)
I've tutored all levels of mathematics to students of all ages, including adults. I believe a solid understanding of mathematics is essential to a well-rounded education, and my goal is not only for the student to be able to successfully complete the problems but to truly understand the reasoning behind the computations. I love working with people and strive to create a comfortable atmosphere where the student is not afraid to ask questions, even if they think it may be a "dumb" question.
I have a B.S. in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin-Superior, and I've been tutoring for 10 years. I am comfortable tutoring all levels of math at the high school level, and have worked with college students as well. In particular, I have tutored a number of college students in Statistics, as it is a required course in many of the sciences and tends to be more mathematically robust than other courses in some of those sciences.
The only thing I ask is that the student come to the lessons prepared. Ideally, they should have already worked on the material, attempted the problems, and struggled with the concepts on their own. My job is to help explain the topics that are still unclear after this initial work. This approach will make the best use my my time and your money. What you can expect from me is that I will arrive on time and do my absolute best to clear up topics in a way that the student can understand.
Ultimately, my goal is to help my students understand the material and feel confident. I am patient and understanding, and I do not have a condescending tone. In my opinion, there is no place for that. I am here to help and guide; not to flaunt my knowledge or to show how smart I am. In the end, I want to see my students succeed and potentially gain a new appreciation for math that they may not have known was there.
I look forward to hearing from you! Please contact me and we can set up a time/location for our first lesson. I've tutored all levels of mathematics to students of all ages, including adults. Statistics and math is not my strongest suit. I struggle immensely with even the simplest concepts and simple math. Nick was very patient with me and very understanding if I didn't understand something the first time. I really liked and appreciated the fact that he would try is hardest to come up with a different way to approach explaining a problem if it seemed as though I wasn't understanding the first way. I really look forward to future lessons with Nick and I think that he is a great fit for anyone struggling with math or statistics. He is very knowledgeable about the material and there hasn't been anything we have covered that he doest know. I am feeling very confident about passing statistics as long as Nick is by my side helping! A+++++
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am able to coach beginners. I am ranked ~1350 on chess.com, and I understand the basic ideas behind opening theory, tactics, strategy, and endgame theory. I am able to teach the basics of the game and take someone who understands how the pieces move to a level where they are making sound, logical decisions based on the board position. My main methodology is to go over a certain topic, have the student work some puzzles based on that topic, and review a game or two that showcase this topic.
I am mostly self-taught in drums, but I did take 2-3 years of lessons early on. I have performed in several gigging bands over the years. When teaching, I use Alfred as the main lesson book, Breeze Easy for straight snare technique, Around the World With Triplets for coordination around the set, and I put emphasis on the 40 rudiments. I also played in the percussion section in band in High School and college.
I'm classically trained with a B.S. in Music and have worked as an accompanist at University of Minnesota-Duluth, University of Wisconsin-Superior, and several High Schools and Middle schools. I have taught piano lessons for 20 years and have primarily used the Bastien Piano Method with Fingerpower as a technique supplement. I also incorporate theory into my lessons with a focus on reading charts. In addition, my more advanced students are expected to learn all the major/minor scales and arpeggios.
