About Kim

I currently have a degree in Special Education with an emphasis in Learning Disabilities and a degree in Elementary Education. I have taught for the past 11 years in the Janesville and Madison school districts as a special education teacher. I have decided to stay home with my children while they are young. I have two children, a son who is 3 and a daughter who is 9 months. They keep me running! Since I am not teaching in a classroom this year, I would love to still help young children learn! I miss the hustle and bustle of the school day and the sounds of children learning.

I have experience teaching Reading, Writing and Math to elementary school children grades K - 5. I enjoy working 1:1 with students and to help make learning fun through hands on activities and games. While I haven't done outside tutoring before, I am used to working on individual student needs in depth through focusing on their IEP goals.

I have experience teaching math through hands on activities with some memorization practice of math facts. I have taught whole group, small group and 1:1 math lessons focused around IEP goals.

I have taught reading through a variety of methods and work to figure out what would be the best for each student. I have used Direct Instruction, guided reading (planning a novel study with focusing on vocabulary and comprehension) and of course sight word instruction through games!

Handwriting requires practice! I have knowledge of a few different handwriting programs that uses a variety of tools to focus on letter formation, finger strength and grasp as well as neatness and letter spacing.

I have a degree in Special Education- Learning Disabilities. I have experience working with students of all needs being a Cross Categorical Teacher for the past 11 years.

Please contact me with any questions or inquire about available times. I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I hold a degree in Elementary Education and Special Education with a focus on Learning Disabilities. I have been a Special Education teacher for the past 11 years. I have taught all subjects both in small group and through co-teaching in a general education classroom.

Phonics

Having taught Special Education for 11 years, teaching phonics was a daily lesson for each student based on their IEP. I have taught phonics using Words their Way, Jolly Phonics as well as through core curriculum from their general education classroom. I teach phonics through a variety of methods including reading books, playing games and paper/pencil tasks.
