About Sarah

Hello there! My name's Sarah. I just started grad school at UW-Madison to pursue a PhD in Biomedical Engineering more specifically in the field of biomechanics. I have been tutoring a variety of subjects formally for about 7 years starting my sophomore year in high school. I began with peer tutoring for geometry along with SSAT math for family friends. Since starting college I've tutored elementary through high school math independently along with PSAT Math. Through Bucknell's Teaching and Learning Center I've tutored and lead study groups for intro college physics and lead a group for an intro college calculus course. On top of tutoring in the past 3 years I've also been a Teaching Assistant for courses in physics, circuits, electronics, and CAD.

I'm primarily looking to tutor standardized test math along with lower grade level math. Standardized test math has always come easily to me, but despite this I'm entirely understanding of the struggles involved with test taking. I think I do well in identifying areas of weakness as well as strength to fill holes while also building the necessary confidence to succeed. My years of experience mean that I know a variety of approaches for different types of problems. I love working with younger students especially in hopes that I can help to alleviate some of the math anxiety that continues to plague students even up into college. My next step is to head off to graduate school to pursue a PhD with hopes of becoming a professor in the future.

The majority of my tutoring has been in math. I find I enjoy tutoring it, specifically at the lower levels and for standardized tests, because of the consistency between school and courses. I loved math particularly as a young student and I have high hopes of inspiring that enthusiasm in other children. What I've found is that often the issues students have even in college math are rooted in problems with algebra and part of me hopes to combat that at the source.

I've been using Excel since elementary school but since coming to college, the past 4 years have been constant Excel exposure through my engineering and physics courses. Additionally for my research I've used files with 40-50 sheets with 1000s of rows, know all the time saving tricks, can make beautiful plots, and have enough of a coding background and experience in Excel itself to do some pretty fancy computing. Most people don't realize just how powerful a tool Excel can be.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or to schedule with me! From now until I start grad school in September, my time will be incredibly flexible.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ballroom Dancing

I've been ballroom dancing for three years and competing for two years up to the bronze level in International Waltz, V Waltz, Tango, Quickstep, Cha Cha, Rumba, Jive, and Samba along with American Walz, V Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Cha Cha, Rumba, and Swing. I have been teaching beginner lessons to college students for the past year. I'd be suited to teach intro level lessons.

Geometry

I began peer tutoring geometry my junior year of high school and have since been privately hired numerous times. Geometry just doesn't click for some people, but I think I have a solid enough foundation in the subject that I can typically find a path through a proof for example the will resonate with the student. I promise geometry can be fun!

GRE

On the GRE I received a 168 quantitative and 157 verbal. I've been tutoring for standardized tests, especially for the math section, for 7 years now and they're my favorite tutoring topic.

Mechanical Engineering

My undergraduate degree is a BS in biomedical engineering which at Bucknell is best described as a combination of mechanical and electrical engineering, just applied to the body or medical devices. I take much of the same introductory coursework as mechanical engineers with mechanics, circuits, and material science as well as CAD and engineering drawing. I have TAed courses in circuits, CAD, and engineering drawing and my 4 years of research have been in the field of biomechanics.

SAT Math

Years of standardized test math tutoring. SAT scores: 790 quantitative, 690 verbal, & 750 writing.
