I am currently a full-time faculty member in the University of Wisconsin System, and I make time to do some tutoring as well. My interests include languages, literature, history, science, math, and theater. I also spend considerable time outdoors participating in "silent sports." I enjoy such activities as hiking, cycling, cross-country skiing, and climbing.
I am a native speaker of English, born in the United States, and I have taught English at the university level. I also have extensive experience tutoring English (reading, writing, grammar, editing, proofreading) at all levels: elementary school through graduate school. I always start by individualizing a tutoring plan for each student.
This process includes the selection of materials and a discussion of general study skills and strategies for taking tests/exams. It also involves an exploration of learning styles and the best ways to take full advantage of the student's academic strengths. Also, I always emphasize the need to revisit initial plans and assumptions and the importance of making timely adjustments to the existing tutoring plan. I welcome a casual approach to communication, but I insist on strict quality control in terms of knowledge and academic standards.
I invite my prospective students to discuss with me their plans and goals before we begin scheduling the tutoring sessions. Feel free to contact me, and we can begin the conversation! A 2-hour session is $68, and a 3-hour session is $98.
I enjoy teaching reading, and I've developed some reliable strategies for improving reading speed and comprehension. Among other things, I focus on the close analysis of context and the strengthening of vocabulary through enhanced understanding of the principles of etymology.
I have studied math and physics at the university level, and I have helped high school students prepare for SAT and ACT exams. Geometry is actually my favorite branch of mathematics, and I enjoy setting up original geometry problems for my students.
My experience in teaching writing includes work on short writing assignments as well as long documents required at the graduate level. I help students get off to a good start in developing the ideas (before starting a rough draft), and then I emphasize the importance of careful revision. With longer assignments, multiple stages of revision are sometimes necessary.
