About Sky

Raised in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, I attended public, Waldorf and Quaker schools and was a very successful student and a peer tutor for much of my early education. I tutored English as a Second Language and spent time at an orphanage in Nicaragua in high school. I knew by 7th grade that I wanted to be a teacher or to work in schools in some way. I attended Smith College in Massachusetts and studied American Studies with an emphasis in Education and minored in Spanish. I lived in Spain for a year and have recently traveled and studied Spanish in Guatemala.

I taught Humanities and Art at a middle school summer program in Harlem, NYC while I was in college, where I discovered my passion for working with students with unique challenges, and developed an interest in social work or counseling. I was a volunteer counselor at a family homeless shelter and then an office manager at an educational consulting firm that did college counseling and testing for learning disabilities and psychological disorders. I got my Master's degree in School Counseling at University of San Francisco in 2010, and I have been a high school and K-8 school counselor since that time. I just moved to Madison from San Francisco and am looking for tutoring opportunities. I love helping students with organization, study skills, and motivation. I am passionate about learning, fun to be with, and very kind.

I am very experienced with helping students generate topics for meaningful essays, develop their ideas and express their voice in their writing. I also enjoy helping students develop their college list thoughtfully. Together, we can set up their time management plan for accomplishing the applications with less stress, and follow through.

I have worked with the most high-needs students at my schools after school to help with study skills and homework completion. I am passionate about supporting students' needs for motivation and self-esteem when approaching homework challenges, and I have been very successful at helping students turn their academic performance around with great pride.

I was the office manager for five years at an organization that did neuropsychological testing to diagnose learning differences, and as a school counselor I developed a learning support program at a private school that did not have a program when I arrived. That program is now thriving. I am passionate about supporting students' strengths and self esteem when discussing and addressing their unique learning styles. I truly believe that learning differences come with genius and creativity that must be celebrated. I also believe that the challenges that these differences present students with in the context of school can yield tremendous character strengths if they find out how to navigate the system. I am a cheerleader and also hold students accountable. I'm funny and playful but also firm and motivating.

I would love to talk with you about working with your child towards their success and happiness in school and beyond.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
