About Jacob

I'm a former High School physics/chemistry teacher who would love to help students with any science classes they have. I enjoy working with students of varying backgrounds, abilities and needs. I believe hands-on learning is best and have many tricks up my sleeve on how to engage all students in learning. I'm passionate about getting people to enjoy and be successful at science!

I have a degree in astrophysics from UW-Madison and have always been drawn to helping other people learn. There's nothing better than watching all the pieces come together to see a student master a topic. Space facts and nerdy references included free with all sessions.

From teaching high school physics and chemistry, I have gained a deep understanding of the subjects. But, more importantly, I have a vast knowledge of how students learn the topics. This includes common roadblocks to learning as well as multiple ways to present subjects (since not everyone learns the same way).

My degree (and passion) are astronomy. I've coached a 2-time State Champion Science Olympiad team in the Astronomy Event.

I'm positive my strong teaching background has given me the tools to help all students become successful. Please contact me and we can discuss a plan to reach your goals.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Computer Programming

I'm currently employed as a report writer, where I write SQL code to develop detailed reports for a healthcare organization. I've programmed in Python, IDL, MATLAB, HTML and a little Java for previous positions as data analysts. My hands-on experience with coding, paired with my ability to instruct technical subjects as evidenced by being a former high school physics teacher, gives me great confidence that I will be an effective tutor for computer programming.
