About Ethan

I've dealt with a lot of bad math teachers in my time as a student. But I've also had the pleasure of working with a few of the very finest. These experiences have left me with a strong impression of the way mathematics should be taught. Instead of being instructed, students deserve time to explore. Instead of memorizing a fact, a student should learn to discover that fact herself. Instead of being told what mathematics means, a student should discover what mathematics means to her.

I try to cultivate this atmosphere of inquiry when I teach. My students are continually surprised at how much they can figure out on their own. My methods are often general prods and prompts; when called upon to explain an object, I offer several alternate routes to its explanation. When mathematics is taught in this way, anxiety and discomfort are alleviated, and confidence is built.

I have a BS in Mathematics (cum laude) from Stony Brook University in New York, one of the top-ranking math programs in the country. However, my real alma mater is the summer program I attended in high school, the Hampshire College Summer Studies in Mathematics. I've since been back twice to teach, developing and implementing innovative inquiry-based curriculum for talented high school students. For the past few months, I've been a private tutor for college and high school students in the Madison area.

If you're finding yourself in a math bind, I would love to help you out. I'm as location-flexible as Madison Metro will allow, but I generally prefer locations downtown, on campus, or Near West. Do good math!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

I have studied theory and composition for over a decade. I graduated college with a minor in Jazz Theory, having written works performed in concert by the University Big Band. I studied composition with MacArthur grantee Daria Semegen.

Linear Algebra

I took several semesters of linear algebra at Stony Brook University, including one graduate algebra seminar. I developed and taught a short "Introduction to Abstract Linear Algebra"-style course at the Hampshire College Summer Studies in Mathematics, designed for high school students with no prior experience.
