About Paul

I recently finished my PhD in English at UW-Madison, and I'm currently available for tutoring in the Madison area. I have experience teaching middle school, high school, community college, and university English and writing. I have taught SAT Prep courses for Kaplan, have graded SAT exams, and volunteer as a college admissions interviewer for my undergraduate school, Oberlin College. I also have professional experience in editing and publishing.

While completing my PhD, I worked with the UW Writing Center, and am comfortable working with students of all ages, on a variety of projects, at any stage of the writing process. I have helped develop and edit everything from personal essays to dissertations to novels, and am happy to assist during the brainstorming, planning, writing, or editing stage. Writing is a SKILL that can be LEARNED, not something that some people are just "naturally" better at than other people!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I'm a college-level English instructor with a PhD from UW Madison. I'm happy to tutor the entire ACT exam, however. Also, I'm a college admissions essay / interview volunteer and can work with students on their applications. Getting started early is key to succeeding on standardized tests and college admissions!

ACT Reading

Although I took the SAT rather than the ACT, I am a former Kaplan SAT tutor. I also have experience grading standardized exams. My SAT scores gained me admission to several highly selective colleges.

English

I'm a college level English professor, but also have experience teaching high school. I do not teach ESL classes, but I have many hours experience teaching writing to second language students. I'm happy to teach any subject within English, from poetry to Shakespeare to college application essay writing.

GED

I used to teach Intro to College Writing for MATC, and have experience working with students who are returning to school as adults. I'm happy to tutor the entire GED exam. Earning the GED can be a helpful step toward furthering a career or pursuing higher education.

Literature

I hold a PhD in English from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. My areas of expertise are American fiction, especially of the 20th and 21st century. I have also taught Native American fiction and African American fiction.

PSAT

I took the PSAT before high school. Subsequently I have taken the SAT, GRE, and have worked for Kaplan as a tutor. I also took the GRE Literature subject test. My standardized test scores have always earned me acceptance to selective colleges, and I'm happy to share the tips and tricks. Taking practice tests from the earliest age possible is definitely an advantage.

Reading

I hold a PhD in English from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a bachelor's in English from Oberlin College. My areas of expertise are American fiction, especially of the 20th and 21st century. I have also taught Native American fiction and African American fiction.

SAT Reading

I am a former Kaplan SAT tutor. I also have experience grading standardized exams. My SAT scores gained me admission to several highly selective colleges.

SAT Writing

While getting my PhD in English at UW-Madison, I also worked as a writing instructor at the UW Writing Center. I have also taught writing courses at Madison College, and have worked in the publishing industry.

SSAT

I took the SSAT prior to high school and earned National Merit Scholar status as a result of my scores. During high school I took the SAT. After college I took the GRE, and I also became a tutor for Kaplan.

Vocabulary

I'm an English professor who reads widely. I'm happy to work with students on vocabulary building exercises for the SAT / ACT / general knowledge. I'm comfortable working with second language students who seek to build their English vocabulary.

Writing

I used to work in the University of Wisconsin Writing Center, and have also taught College Writing at MATC. I'm happy to help plan, write, edit, and revise any piece of writing. Studying for the writing portion of standardized tests is very possible, and as a former grader of those tests, I'm happy to share the tips and tricks that lead to higher scores.
