About John

Hello! I am a dedicated tutor who enjoys sharing my love of learning with others. I have had a lot of success in school and on standardized tests, but I also know what it is like to struggle with material at first. I also know that with hard work, dedication, and persistence, educational obstacles can and will be overcome. As your tutor, I will give you all of my effort and energy - all I ask is for the same dedication in return.

I graduated summa cum laude from the University of Minnesota. Currently, I work as a math tutor for algebra and geometry students at Madison Memorial High School in Madison, WI. Previously, I worked as a math tutor with 4th and 5th graders at Pratt Community School in Minneapolis, MN, so I have experience with a wide variety of ages and abilities in math. In August, I will begin medical school at the University of Wisconsin.

With my liberal arts degree, I have experience in a wide variety of courses. I am available for ACT prep. For coursework, I tutor math from elementary school through algebra 2 and trigonometry, as well as chemistry and physics. I will also work with you to become a stronger writer, and this includes personal statements for college and graduate school.

I have a flexible schedule, with availability weekday evenings and on week-ends. I will give you my best effort as your tutor; I look forward to meeting you and working with you to achieve academic success!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

For one year, I was a math tutor at a public elementary school in Minneapolis through an AmeriCorps program called Minnesota Math Corps. My 12 4th and 5th grade students had a very successful year in which they learned a lot about math and began to enjoy the subject quite a bit. I really like working with this age group and have had quite a bit of academic success with them.

Sociology

I majored in Sociology at the University of Minnesota and graduated with summa cum ladue honors. I also completed two independent, semester-long research projects, served as a teaching assistant for one semester, and wrote for an open source sociology web-site. I can help you with your intro class and paper writing, and for advanced classes I have particular knowledge in research methods, health, migration, education, race, gender, and class.

Study Skills

Throughout college, I regularly balanced 15 - 20 credits per semester with research, work, and volunteer commitments. I applied and was accepted to medical school, which required taking and passing the MCAT, soliciting letters of recommendation, and completing application essays. I am very organized and good at setting priorities and managing my time. In my roles as a math tutor at an elementary school and a high school, I have engaged students in these processes and they have had a lot of success.

He asked questions, brought his own white board for solving examples, and went step-by-step through geometry problems that my daughter didn't understand. Would definitely have him back again!
