About James

I was raised by a liberal Protestant minister in Indiana, so my exposure to religion literally begins before I was born. I went to Northwestern University (1981-1985)and received my BA in Religion, focusing on Buddhism. I also took a great number of history, philosophy and political science courses. I then went to Cambridge University and received my BA and MA in Theology (1985-1987). Here, I studied the Tanakh, New Testament, the history of the Roman Empire and Medieval Europe and Koine Greek. After this, I entered the University of Chicago (1987-1991) and received an MDiv, a ministry degree. I undertook special studies in the History of the ancient near east and passed the Greek and Sanskrit exams. After a year in a Canadian pastorate, I realized my scope viz. religion had grown far beyond just one religion, and so, I returned to my education and went to the University of Wisconsin - Madison receiving a PhD in Buddhist/Religious Studies and Sanskrit language. Subsequently I taught at the University of Wisconsin - Madison (1998-1999 and (2005-2007), Edgewood College (1997-1998), Madison College (2004-2010), the University of Iowa (2001-2002 - Sanskrit) and the University of Wisconsin Colleges Online(2010 - present), and Central Michigan University (2013 - present).

I am a very involved and caring tutor. I had great models for tutors at the University of Cambridge and to this day, I assert: private, one-on-one tutoring is the very fastest way to master a subject.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
