In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I taught English as a second or foreign language at all levels and practically for all ages for 24 years in France and Spain. I taught grammar, advanced conversation, and composition at the University of Deusto in Bilbao and those subjects, as well as all levels of language proficiency, in the ESL program of the American Cultural Center connected to the American embassy in Madrid. In the Madrid program I was a model teacher for interns from the St. Louis University esl course and for new and part-time teachers.
I compiled my first English grammar book when I was in the fifth grade! As a student and later as an English teacher I was always the go-to person for my colleagues when they had doubts either about usage or about how to explain certain grammar concepts to students. On top of an early grounding in English I have had a lifetime of reading, writing, speaking, and teaching both native speakers and speakers of other languages.

In 1995 I conducted two workshops at Tennessee State University on teaching composition to foreign students.
In 2002 and 2004 I created and conducted a six-week workshop in reading and writing for gifted high school students at the UW-Madison.
