About Nathan

I offer all-level individualized instruction in English, German, Norwegian, Danish, Swedish, Icelandic, Old Norse, Old English, Finnish, Modern Irish, Spanish, and Latin. I use a low-pressure, baby-step method focusing on understanding and getting a message across. Grammar and structure is taught holistically, in context, and through patterned whole sentences. I use 80% target language in small, comfortable doses, then give homework, summary and discussion in English.

I have tutored for the UW-Madison Scandinavian Studies and German departments, as well as taught my own UW German language courses. In the private sector I served as an educational adjunct in a small dormitory and focused on writing and composition. While living several periods abroad, I tutored foreign language, then became immersed in hands-on language acquisition during language camp participation in Norway, Iceland and Ireland.

I have a broader knowledge of creative writing, world religions, European folklore, song and dance, ancient and Medieval history, ecology, botany, foraging, historical farming, nutrition and naturopathy.

My one-on-one people skills were sharpened through travel, co-operative living, and employment with Rem-Wisconsin where I mentored people with a great variety of cognitive disabilities.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

ESL. UW Foreign Language Department. Princeton House Dormitory tutor. Tutor in Europe (England, Ireland, Germany).

ESL/ESOL

I studied Second Language Acquisition at university through my foreign language curriculum, and tutored Koreans, Chinese, Brazilians, Germans, Africans and Arabic native speakers at Princeton House.

German

I lived in Germany multiple years, attended graduate level school conducted in German in the city of Freiburg, and am near Ph.D. level from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I have 5 years of university level teaching (1st two years) plus multiple years in tutoring.

Religion

I am an expert on European religions, all of them. This was my central expertise as a Folklorist within my graduate school career in old Germanic and Medieval Studies. In every text I worked with over a span of six years, the contents was religion, Christianity and *mythology.* I was studying old texts made up of mythology in the time of mass mixed religions in Europe were Christianity was syncretized with native religions. This is the history of the entire conversion of Germany, Scandinavia and the British Isles to new religious systems.

In this case, this expertise isn't something on the side, just for sake of comparison. Folklorists working in this period are dealing almost exclusively with belief systems - that is the meat and potatoes of the entire research, with the ability to read and use the languages as a tool. I am not an authority on every world religion, but European Religions. However, no one in this field of study gets by without a generous dose of World Religion and the fundamental ability to talk about any religious system in the world.
