About Kimberley

Previously, I was a 6th grade teacher of students at risk of failing middle school. I also have much experience working with children and adults with autism. My specialty is the fact that I am able to really understand the material at hand and I am able to think of many different ways in which to teach the material. As we all know, everyone learns at different paces and in his or her own way - so it is important to present material in a variety of ways in the hope that a particular strategy will stick! My other specialty is my ability in helping the student to retain and recall the material. This is not easy to do, but what good is teaching the material if the student is not able to retain it?

My recent training in Orton-Gillingham (Dyslexia/Learning Disabilities) has allowed me to strengthen my "toolkit" in order to be the most prepared tutor. I also have much experience working with a diverse background of cultures. In addition, I have tutored students and adults who struggle with Dyslexia around the state-VIRTUALLY.

Each one of my students comment that: "I am fun." I inject humor and much encouragement into each lesson. I build on the strengths of each student and help students to feel confident as learners!

Sincerely,
Kim

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

While obtaining my teaching degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, I completed the following required courses:
1. Arithmetical Problem Solving
2. Geometry Inference and Reasoning
3. Teaching Math: Pre-school-Middle School
4. Practicum in Math (1 semester)

In addition, as a certified 6th grade teacher, I team taught the Math (CMP) curriculum daily for 4 years.

Additionally, while obtaining my Bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, I took many math courses as part of the general degree requirements. Courses taken while at Platteville: Statistics, General Math, Experiential Math

Phonics

During my undergraduate education program at U.W. Madison, the teaching of literacy was excellent. I submitted many research papers which discussed and contrasted various phonetic type early language learning curriculi. In addition, through my past teaching experiences, I have taught phonics, phonemic awareness and literacy/writing/spelling/speaking skills to students.

Reading

Training in Orton-Gillingham Reading Instruction. Trained in Direct Instruction. Guided Reading Experience. Balanced Literacy.

Study Skills

My speciality is giving students the tools they need in order to stay focused and organized in school. In my former career as an at-risk teacher, much of my work involved teaching successful study skills to students and helping them to pass standardized tests. My students always showed progress that stayed with them through middle school and high school.
