About Judith

Nothing is more rewarding than watching a student understand a new concept after investing hours of hard work. I love learning new subjects because it hones my skills as a teacher, tutor and mentor. Successful tutoring is about helping the student develop skills. I specialize in English and math for success at school. Whether a student and I are working on multiplying fractions, answering an essay question or creating a plan of action to prepare for an upcoming exam, I create learning environments that challenge, but do not overwhelm the student.

Try this study skill guaranteed to work: Practice learning new material in short bursts. You will absorb more from ten 10-minute practice/study sessions than you will from one 100-minute session.

To ensure student success, I assign homework designed to help them practice what we worked on in our tutoring session. I provide periodic progress reports and feedback.

I earned my MA with High Honors from the William Allen White School of Journalism, U Kansas, I am CELTA certified to teach English as a second language, I am a published writer and an award-winning independent film producer.

Professionally I have taught all levels from kindergarten to university undergraduates. I have been a resident artist in schools all over the US with some of my students winning awards for their creative work.

I am passionate about the natural world and about writing non-fiction and fiction.

I look forward to working with you to help you achieve your learning goals.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

Successful teaching and tutoring is based on a student's learning style. Some students are visual learners, some auditory learners, some kinesthetic or "hands-on" learners. I have experience in the classroom as a teacher, as a visiting artist, as a substitute teacher and as a tutor. My ability to present materials in a way that is compatible with the student's learning style is key to building the student's confidence and helping the student truly understand the subject matter.

Study Skills

Students can be visual learners, auditory learners or kinesthetic learners. Some people have a combination of learning styles.

Working one-on-one with a student allows the tutor to observe how the student processes information. Choosing materials that fit the student's learning style is key to developing effective study skills.

I have worked as a teacher, artist in the schools, substitute teacher, university professor and private tutor.

Whether tutoring a child or an adult learner, understanding how an individual processes information is the key to ensure the student's success.

An exceptional tutor!! — Judith has been tutoring our nine year old son in reading and writing. Some educators have tried to convince us that our son might have a learning disability or an attention deficit disorder. Judith's working with our son has demonstrated that his issue was really a lack of confidence! She is a patient tutor, engaging, and will take the time to get to know your child's likes. We feel she has given ...
