I have taught high school English for over 35 years in private as well as in public schools, and this profession still energizes me much as it did my first year. Teaching is an honorable vocation in the truest sense of the word--a calling, really, and there's nothing else I'd rather do. Above all else, I value kindness. I encourage my students to build from their strengths, and my own enthusiasm is contagious. My students come to understand and love literature (even poetry), and their writing improves dramatically. I've prepared students for the College Board's Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition Exam, as well as for the ACT. I am well-trained to improve students' analytical reading, their understanding of grammar, and their ability to write well. As the mom of grown and college-aged children, I know the importance of such skills--not only in high school but also in college and career. My Master's Degree is in Gifted Education, but I've taught all levels and courses. I've infinite patience and explain material clearly. My Illinois teaching certificate is current.
I am willing to tutor in Lake County, Illinois as well as in Kenosha County, Wisconsin. Summer tutoring allows students to brush up on their written skills and reading abilities to begin the new school year on better academic footing. For students with whom I work over the summer, I am willing to continue tutoring into the new school year. My preference is to tutor in a student's local public library, at a quiet table in a central public area. I know summers are busy, so I request a two hours notice for cancellations and a rescheduling convenient to both parties. Tutoring is available from 10:00 a.m.--6:00 p.m., including Saturdays.
I look forward to working with your child--to reinforce lessons s/he may have struggled with during the previous grade, to strengthen his/her current skills, and to get a great headstart on the new school year so as to enter confidently and calmly. Have a great day! I have taught high school English for over 35 years in private as well as in public schools, and this profession still energizes me much as it did my first year. For two consecutive hours on the same day and during a single session, the hourly rate is $40/hour.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
