About K.K.

I am an SAS programer with a BA in computer science and 14 years of SAS experience. I have helped train junior programmers on the job and tutored graduate students at the University of Pennsylvania. I teach basic good programming practice, starting with defining the problem and looking at the layout of the data. When developing a report or a dataset it is useful to think of the data as a piece of paper and discuss in what ways we need to cut, fold and paste it together to get the result we need. Once the desired process is clear, we can use the simplest steps to program it. Programs should *always* be written interactively, looking at the data to make sure we are handling it in the way we intend. Programs should *always* be written/debugged one step at a time so we are working from a solid foundation. Writing in this way makes debugging easy, and guarantees correct results.

I emphasize "defensive" programming practices. Comments and labels should be used sensibly to make your code self-documenting so you remember what you are doing and do not introduce errors. SAS macro variables and SAS macros can save you a lot of work. None of these things should be over-used. They are ways to handle complexity, not to create more complexity. We will always write the simplest program possible to do the job, because doing extra work is silly.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
