I received my Bachelors of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee with a double major in Ceramics and Drawing/Painting. My skills in ceramics include hand building, figurative sculpture, slip casting, and wheel throwing. I am well versed in drawing and painting media of all styles as well. Between 2009 and 2011, I did extensive field work and research in traditional materials and methods. This includes the study of local clay bodies and creating my own custom clay. In addition, I use primitive and experimental firing process that range from basic pit firing to raku to alcohol reduction. I often build my own kilns to do so. I have taught ceramics workshops over the past 8 years to students of all ages both in the classroom and back-country setting.

I have tutored high school and adult students who needed help with figure drawing and visual composition to improve portfolio work. Figure drawing presents a unique challenge to many students. I have 7 years of formal figure study in both drawing/painting and ceramic sculpture. After a semester in Italy studying renaissance art history, sculpture, and traditional painting, I was inspired by Davinci and Michelangelos attention to details regarding the human form. This lead me to take two semesters of formal training in anatomy and physiology through UW-Milwaukee to better understand the human body structures beyond the surface. To help students understand what they are drawing, I will teach them muscles and bone structures and even build clay muscles on plastic skeletons. This is just one of many techniques.

In addition to my art background, I have a relentless passion for experiential education and love teaching in non traditional ways. Since 2009, I have been teaching wilderness adventure, emergency readiness, and survival programs throughout the Great Lakes region and around the globe through my company "Nick of the Woods." I feel my creative personality helps me both in the classroom and on the trail. Within the past 5 years, I have taught for K-12 and UW schools, Wilderness Therapy programs, and numerous private, public, and non-profit organizations. Furthermore, I am a Regional Coordinator for the Wisconsin Association for Environmental Education where I have developed and facilitated "Artist Naturalist" programs for all ages and skill levels around SE Wisconsin.

If you are interested in a fun and meaningful tutoring experience whether it be figure drawing, painting, sculpture, kiln building, or ceramics. Or you just help creating rich narratives in your current work, look no further. I am very flexible, easy going, and happy to assist you in reaching your goals.
