About Sharon

¡HOLA! BONJOUR! After 10 years as a travel agent, I earned a Master's from Northwestern University. I studied 8 languages, but earned degrees in Spanish and French. My energy level is off the charts! It's contagious! You will learn while you laugh, but you WILL learn! I'm in my 22nd year at a college in Lake County. Though I taught 10 courses at 4 schools, including 1 high school and 3 colleges + tutored 5 students all at the same time -- and loved all of it -- my private tutoring experiences were perhaps the most rewarding! I just love people and communicating with them one on one and helping them to communicate in other languages. Your working with me will be a very positive experience. You will smile and you WILL succeed! I am a highly skilled and serious educator, but also a very funny warm fuzzy! My help and your confidence will be the keys to your success! You CAN do it!

P.S. My English skills are excellent! I've taught ESL; I have edited manuscripts, I also write poetry, short stories, and novels. I'm adept at grammar and vocabulary, as well. I had 4 years of Latin in high school plus began Spanish there. Latin perfected my understanding of English and provided the catalylst that launched my passionate pursuit of languages! I LOVE words and their power to impact our lives and culture!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

ACT English tutor approved. This tutor also writes poetry, short stories, and novels. Words greatly impact our lives. English is a VERY rich language, a literal treasure trove of words!

English

English tutor approved. Have been teaching languages for 25 years - elementary, secondary and post-secondary. Write poetry, short stories, novels. VERY formidable command of the English language!

ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL approved. Have taught corporate expats and private students from all over the globe.

French

French tutor approved. MA French Northwestern U. Have taught/tutored French (and Spanish) for years, as well as studied a number of other languages. A Chapter President Emeritus: French National Honor Society. Travel agent for a decade, including travel to French-speaking areas.

Grammar

I am one who always delighted in the study of grammar! I did this assiduously throughout my student life, often pouring over grammar books just for the "fun of it".

In teaching Spanish, French, and ESL for many years, I have put my devotion to structure to good use by relating one language to another to facilitate cognition. Frankly, I do not believe that grammar receives sufficient attention in the curriculum. As a consequence, not infrequently, the native English speaker lacks the fundamental tools to express him or herself effectively and, critically so, in cases where clear and accurate communication is of paramount importance. I am able to reverse this situation.

Proofreading

I have taught foreign languages for years, as well as ESL. I have proofread dissertational as well as other written genres. I am fastidious on all fronts: syntax, morphology, style, and overall content. I myself write poetry, short stories, and novels and take considerable pleasure in proofreading my own writings, as well. I am meticulous and relish the challenge of elevating the written word from a level of excellence to that of virtual perfection yielding an end product deserving of the attention of the more sophisticated reader. For me, proofreading is, indeed, a challenge as well as a labor of love!

Spanish

Spanish tutor approved. Have taught/tutored Spanish for years. Currently in my 24th year at a well known IL college. Member: National Honor Society in Spanish. Also, have an MA in French (Northwestern) and have studied a number of other languages. Travel agent for a decade, including travel to Spanish-speaking areas.

TOEFL

I hold a bachelor's (summa cum laude) in French and Spanish and a master's in French and have been teaching these two languages as well as ESL for many years. Additionally, I studied Latin (four years), plus Italian, German, Greek, and Japanese. In these venues plus being well traveled (travel agent for a decade), I have experienced multilingual and multicultural interactions over a protracted period of time. I believe I am qualified to facilitate international students' preparedness.

Vocabulary

I have studied quite a number of languages with higher degrees in French and Spanish. I began building an arsenal of vocabulary in my native English at a very early age. I have always delighted in words and their meanings and their potential for more concise and precise communication. I continue to write poetry, short stories, novels and, of course, to build vocabulary on a daily basis. Words do matter and vocabulary building is the exaltation of mere basic communication and, as such, enlightens and enriches one's life experience.

Writing

For years, I have been a foreign language and ESL teacher and tutor with a four-year basis in Latin, which also significantly impacts one's understanding of the structural and etymological complexities of the English language. English is my native language and first love---linguistically speaking. Its communicative spectrum is rich and broad and has rightly earned for it a respected place in the global community. As an unabashedly proud user of my naive English, I flaunt it through its proper usage and incomparable vocabulary. I do this first and foremost in speaking it and then in writing novels, short stories, and poetry. I respond with alacrity to anyone who asks me for an assist in developing and polishing its application. It is an honor and a pure pleasure to share this with others; it is truly a labor of love!
