Marilyn has just begun working with my son. He is dyslexic and has a great deal anxiety when doing anything with reading. Marilyn is very calm, methodical and patient with him. It is slow right now but he is beginning to make progress. Marilyn communicates what she is doing and explains why she is doing it. She makes sure I understand the steps involved with teaching my son to read. She has also found ways to keep him motivated and interested during their sessions. So far an excellent tutor.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a certified special education and reading teacher and have worked with pre-K through grade 12 students in my classrooms for over 35 years in Indiana, Ohio, Neenah and Racine WI. I have also worked with dyslexic, autistic and ADHD students in private tutoring primarily concentrating on their academic needs in reading, writing and spelling. I have engaged in continued college coursework, workshops and attended yearly Special Education Conferences to keep current with ongoing research and teaching methods.
For the past 6 years I have instructed my students using the Susan Barton multi-sensory phonetic program, based on the Orton-Gilllingham approach to teaching reading to Dyslexic individuals. This program is research based and has been used to successfully teach dyslexic learners to read.
I was trained to use the Barton system through a summer workshop at the Dyslexia Tutoring Connection in Appleton, WI. from June through August 2006. I have worked as a Dyslexia tutor for the past 6 years and have used this program with students in my position as a Certified Middle School Reading Teacher for Neenah School District and Elementary Reading Teacher for Racine School District.
I completed the 3 credit graduate course "Diagnosing Dyslexia" on July 30, 2011 with a grade of "A" through the University of San Diego and taught by Susan Barton.
I received my Bachelor's Degree in Special Education from the University of Cincinnati in 1973. I currently hold a Wisconsin Teaching Certificate in the area of Cognitive Disabilities, pre-K through grade 12.
