About Tina

Hello! As a certified teacher with emphasis in special education, experienced as a co-teacher, special education paraprofessional, and substitute teacher, with grades Pre-K (4K) through Fifth Grade in diverse, high-poverty rate districts, I understand the challenges faced by students.

I'm a mother of two, both exceptional students in their own right. One an honor roll student since Third Grade and a current National Honors Society member and the other having multiple learning disorders, including Autism. I personally know that the approach to learning needs to be different, engaging, and fun based on each child's interests, strengths, and challenges.

I invite you to review my portfolio and contact me with any questions. I look forward to working with you and your child.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have a son with ADHD and therefore am familiar with teaching modifications to accommodate students with similar learning disabilities. Again, this experience is personal. I do not have specific ISBE certification for ADD/ADHD. I am certified to substitute teach K-12, all subjects.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a substitute teaching certificate from the Illinois State Board of Education. I can provide my certificate number if requested.

Elementary Math

K - 6 math concepts.

English

English was my focus in high school and my major in college for two years (before switching to marketing).

Grammar

As a previous English major, I'm familiar with using proper grammar.

Literature

Again, as a previous English major, I've studied many forms of literature, including:

American Literature
Shakespeare
World Literature

Microsoft PowerPoint

I have been a Microsoft PowerPoint user for over 13 years. I am also a user of Keynote.

Microsoft Word

I have been a Microsoft Word user for more than two decades in various positions ranging from secretarial to marketing manager.

Phonics

While substituting for K-2, I have used Heggerty Phonics Awareness. Additionally, I have taught phonics during Kindergarten substitute assignments.

Proofreading

As a marketing manager, it was my responsibility to proofread and edit copy prior to distribution for approval from upper management and printing. I also utilized proofreading skills prior to submitting APA and MLA documents for college.

Reading

I teach reading grades K-8 in substitute teaching positions.

Spelling

I teach spelling grades K-6 as a substitute teacher.

Study Skills

Again, this is based on personal experience. I can assist with learning study skills or providing techniques to improve study skills.

Updated Description:

For instance, my son is a visual learner, therefore I help him study by making things as visual as possible. Each week I create a Keynote presentation with his vocabulary words. I find an image of the book or story associated with his vocabulary words (he helps pick the image). I have one slide with just the vocabulary word. The next slide show the vocabulary word in smaller type and the definition in larger type. I do this for his entire list. When I'm done, we go through the Keynote slideshow together. Then I hit "record" and he says each word and each definition according to the slide. He enjoys the process and it does two things: it teaches him visually and it encourages his verbal communication.

My other son is an honor roll student and doesn't need as much help with studying. For him, the best thing I have found is to put the concepts, words, definitions, etc., that he is struggling with on index cards. He uses these to test himself. For instance, he is learning square roots of 13 through 20. He must memorize them. I created index cards that show 13 squared on one side and the answer on the other. I also created the answer using the square root symbol with the number needed to make that square root on the other side.

Other techniques I've used as a substitute teacher include relating the material to something the students understand (ex: relating "probability" to how likely they will or will not do something when they get home from school), or using tools such as Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally when teaching the order of operation in math.

Vocabulary

I teach vocabulary to grades K-6 as a substitute teacher.

Writing

I am familiar with both APA and MLA formats, as all my college papers required one format or the other. Additionally, tutored other college students in formatting their papers correctly.
