Career Development

As a person with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Dietetics, I am qualified to assist students in career development. As a Registered Dietitian, we are required to complete an internship, in order to take a registration exam, giving us national accreditation, as long as our 75 continuing education credits are kept with every five years. I also have experience, with homeless shelters, coaching coworkers and helping clients who have struggled with poverty, develop goals and consider the various possibilities that are out there they may not yet be aware of, while also comparing the characteristics of this career path with the kind of lifestyle they see themselves living.
Public Speaking,

Public Speaking

As a Bachelor of Science prepared Registered Dietitian, I have developed and delivered several presentations over the years. However, I have found that simply speaking frequently is not what develops a speaker, but seeking out feedback. As a member of Toastmaster's International I have been able to improve my public speaking through feedback of other members, in addition to learning what makes an effective speaker and ultimately, an effective presentation.

I have trained with The Rockford Literacy Council and Stateline Literacy Council for Adult Tutoring. I had the opportunity to work with an English as a Second Language couple, however it was cut short due to a family emergency that required relocation. From February through September of 2008, I completed the 40 hour Intensive Course and 20 hour Intensive Week-end Course in "Teaching English as a Foreign Language", in addition to completing the Teaching English to Young Learners Course.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

As a person who has continued to seek out educational opportunities following my Bachelor of Science degree, I have learned ways to improve my study habits and have worked with younger family members to improve their study habits. For example, I assisted my niece, who was a freshman in high school and was juggling several sports along with challenging classes. I helped her with a system that allowed her to prioritize her homework, so that she would have a focal point when study time becomes available, how that time would be spent. I also taught her how to rate the content she was studying using a system that indicated whether she had a good, moderate or minimal understanding of what she was studying and then to simply write down in an outline format, the most familiar material. Once she did this, I encouraged her to start on a new page and write in the side margins basic questions or concepts (using chapter headings and end of the chapter questions) of the less familiar material and to write the answers in the body of the paper. She felt better and more confident about her abilities as a student and successfully passed all of the classes she was concerned about at the end of the semester, with her lowest grade being a "B". She continues to use these methods and feels comfortable in knowing she can come to me for assistance.
