About Jill

As you know, there is great satisfaction and joy in empowering students to succeed. One particularly important skill is the ability to express one’s knowledge and thoughts on paper. Writing skills are essential for high school students as they prepare for college.

I graduated Cum Laud from Indiana State University with a B.A. in English and Creative Writing. Throughout my adult life, in both professional and personal settings, I have been the “go to” person for editing and comments on letters, articles, and academic papers. Also, during most of my adult life, I have actively taught and/or assisted students from kindergarten through graduate school in various settings.

With these facts in mind, I am offering myself as a tutor to area middle and high school students who would benefit from supplemental instruction in the areas of English, Writing, and Language Arts. My students learn to write to their audiences with an organized structure, relevant content, clear meaning, correct grammar, and precise word choices.

I am willing to provide as much or as little guidance as is deemed appropriate for your son or daughter. Recommendations and feedback from teachers, counselors, and parents are always welcome. My specialties include writing and grammar. The following are the types of services available:

Weekly tutoring — I will work with students on school assignments and target supplemental exercises and instruction for their specific needs.

Project-oriented tutoring — I will work with each student one-on-one to produce a quality paper and/or project.

Homework monitoring — If your student needs extra support, and you request this, I will monitor homework, exams, and grades. I am also willing to connect with your child’s teachers concerning assignments and progress.

College application assistance — Applying for college is not simple, and nor is applying for scholarships. Even straight A students can benefit from supervision and guidance when writing college and scholarship application essays. A recent student worked with me on four scholarship applications; she was awarded all four, including a prestigious engineering scholarship at the University of Wisconsin at Madison.

Home schooling — Interested parents who home school should contact me so we can discuss their requirements for educational support. Assignments are individualized, and success is measured by quality, timeliness, progress, and attitude.

ACT Prep - ACT Prep classes exist. I prefer to focus on the individual needs of each student. To prepare for the ACT, I teach content, analysis, and strategy.

Thank you very much for your time, and I look forward to talking with you and working out a plan that best meets your family’s needs!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I have been working with children who have autism since 1998 when my son was born. Diagnosed at age three, I began researching and learning about how I could best help him learn and behave. I worked as an educational assistant in a classroom for elementary children who have cognitive disabilities; this included children who had autism. Over the past five years, I have worked with a teenager who has autism. My experience with autism range from birth to the age of 17.

English

I graduated Cum Laud from Indiana State University with a B.A. in English and Creative Writing. For my junior and senior years, I was awarded the prestigious Pfennig Scholarship which was awarded to English majors with outstanding potential as writers and teachers.

Grammar

I attended Indiana State University, earning a B.A. in English and Creative Writing. During my junior year, I signed up for a grammar class, and the professor was amazing. I can honestly say I studied under a "mad professor." As entertaining as he was to watch, I loved his class and learned much. Though I lack his doctorate, I share his enthusiasm for the subject and try to make the study of grammar both interesting and fun.

Proofreading

I have a B.A. in English with a minor in Creative Writing. For seven years, I worked as a Public Affairs Specialist for the Navy. I was the editor of the Center newsletters which had a distribution of about 5,000. I also tutor with a strong emphasis on teaching students to evaluate and proofread their own work.

Special Needs

My journey with special needs children began with my son in 1998. He was diagnosed with autism and given an IQ number of 70 when he was three. Thirteen years have passed, and I have watched and helped him grow into a young man who is far more capable, talented, and independent than I had ever hoped or dreamed.

For a year, I worked in with children who had cognitive disabilities in North Hudson Elementary School. The teacher provided the material which was to be covered, but teaching methods were left largely up to the assistants. The children and I enjoyed working together. I structured my lessons specifically to each child's learning style.

Five years ago, I began working with teenager who also has autism, through a home health care agency. We share a mutual caring and respect for each other, and I have had the opportunity to guide her through many learning experiences.

Writing

I have a B.A. from Indiana State University with major in English and a minor in Creative Writing. My coursework included multiple creative writing classes which improved my ability to write and critique. These classes built my foundation for teaching.
