Marquette University (French and German)
Marquette University (Master's)
I am currently retired after teaching middle and high school French in the Waukesha Public School district. I taught for 30+ years at all levels (FLEX/Foreign Language Exploratory, Levels 1-5 AP). I also have experience teaching summer school French to 2nd-4th graders, to 5th-6th graders in the ABC (Above and Beyond the Curriculum) program. While attaining my Masters in French Language/Literature, I worked as a TA (Teacher Assistant) and taught levels 1 and 2 at Marquette University. In the past, I have tutored in English, History, Math, Chemistry, Spanish as well as French. I enjoy teaching one- on-one, as it is more personal and progress can be made more quickly with individual attention. I am extremely patient, understanding, non-critical, and able to pick up and work at whatever level the student may be at. I love children, and enjoy their energy, passion, and general interest in learning.
I have studied or taught French for most of my life. I love everything about France: its language, culture, history, art, cuisine, customs. During my marriage with a French-speaking person, I spoke French at home and have an extremely good grasp of its vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, structure; and feel comfortable with speaking, listening, reading, writing of the language. While getting my Masters, I studied the history, literature, art, and politics at a very high level.
Having studied French, German, and Spanish, I have an excellent understanding of vocabulary (and the roots of words). Having taught the grammar and structure of a foreign language, this has made me a master at English grammar as well. Reading is my favorite past-time, and I am familiar with the teaching of reading based on phonics, cognates, etc.
I have had a love of history since elementary school. I read extensively about personalities and eras of American history. Currently, I have taken many courses regarding American history (as well as world history) with LIR (Learning in Retirement). My passion of history in general encourages me to continue my lifelong learning of topics during all eras of American history.
I am currently retired, thus am available for tutoring any time of any day -- whatever fits into my students' schedule. I am comfortable with lessons of any length, as I am capable of making learning as interesting and fun as possible. You will find me patient, sympathetic, caring, interesting, noncritical, and fun while learning whatever subject you require help with. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught middle and high school French for over 30 years. I have tutored in several languages as well. I have experience teaching French from 2nd graders up to the college level. I have a masters in French and spoke French at home for several years, thus am very proficient in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Having traveled several times in France, and working as an "au pair" in a suburb of Paris, I am knowledgeable about French culture as well. I love everything French, love teaching the language, and enjoy working with students.
